Good question Bill

I have no idea.

The world is often shaped by unexpected events where leaders can only excert very limited influence.

I would be very surprised if Obama doesn't make it to the White house. He is fresh and more often than note the candidate who can create the most hope for a better future wins. He also looks more virile which seems to sway voters in elections.

Obamas challenge is that he has had to propose leftist views in oder to beat clinton. He now has to find middle ground to win republican votes in the margin. He may be seen as inconsistent in achieving this.

What would favour Mccain is a low probability high impact event which would threaten the security of the US. Another Sep 11th.

Big problem for Mccain is that he follows Bush. This is going to be a hard shakle to get rid of, plus the US have traditionally changed leadership when economic times are hard.

I somehow feel that Obama would make a better President than John McCain. However i am a bit concerned that he has vowed to expand and modernize the military.

Is this the way for Peace in the world?

Interesting point Bill

He might be trying to win the Republican vote by promising an expansion of the military. He has to show a certain amount of toughness to this audience.

Until humans reach a point of inner spiritual peace, which means that we exude love rather than fear (probably won't happen in my lifetime) then innovative weaponry together with sophisticated means of trading maybe the only way to maintain peace.

Through the lastest world peace rating index Cyprus is considered relatively peaceful. Turkey has a large army on the island and the South has highly spohisticated weaponry. You have checkmate. Fighting would only incur extremely heavy casualties on both sides.

The US has to maintain a fairly large force to checkmate the Russians and Chinese. Nobody really knows what Russia and China will do. Both countries are not democracies and probably have expansionist aims of their own.

ps

Apparently, a Turkish plane entered ROC airspace at last weekends intervention celebrations. An ROC missile locked on to the plane but didn't fire. Supposedly, on a Nicosia radio station many GC's insisted that the army should have shot down the plane. This was expressd on another forum and I have no way of verifying the truth on this matter.

pps if the Nicosia radio comments are indeed true and not fabrication, then this would demonstrate a deep hostility that GC' have towards the Turks (not TC's). It would seem impossible that GC's could mix peacefully with Turkish settlers.

Apologies but I have completely changed the theme of the thread

I dont think you have changed the theme of the thread.

If you definitely WANT to be in a war McCain is your man.

No-one in the US, EU, Greece or Turkey WANTS Cyprus to be in an internal war.

There are larger fish to fry!

Obama seems to be, despite media comment, more prepared to wave the big stick, but carry on with negotiations.

I think the US, UK, EU, especially their voters, have had enough of our kids coming home in body bags. They want to vote for leaders who will find resolutions without resort to military action.

Personally I think the GC and TC leaders will have to fall into step with international policy and any potential for regional referenda will be diluted as per the EU referenda.

Local posturing is becoming a thing of the past.

p.s. I believe that US military aircraft have been seen on NC airfields, would the GC's even contemplate airborne action against NC?

Not in a million years! It's all posturing.

So,... for me, it's Obama.

No1 Doyen,

Obama is due a meeting with Gordon Brown to discuss world politics.

Brewn has already had the meeting with Macain.

I will go with the one Gordon Brewn is against!

ilc,

Didnt Macain spend his time as a prisoner of war, in The Hanoi Hilton, fed with a diet of prostitutes? All courtesy of daddy?

Just what I read!

Neither can make a difference for the planet they are from the USA!!!!!!!!!

The only country that starts the year off with where should we bomb so we can add it to the Geography curriculum.

Just a thought on the election process, how many hundred million will be spent before one of them is finally in the White House. This process is obscene

And they all go on about world poverty etc. Merchant Bankers all of them.

Only ever met one good guy from the USA and he had spent a lot of time in Germany in forces. He even had a VW Golf cos he prefered manual to auto gearbox.

CIS

The US is a strange country. It seems to be the home for alot of stupidity but also I think that some of the best thinkers on the planet are American. In my field they are simply light years ahead of everyone else.

Please note, When I praise the yanks, I am not talking about US politicians or the US political system
