I wonder if this is the whole story, despite her article having the ring of truth For example take Tonia Buxton's remarks on "My Greek (Cypriot) Kitchen" airing on cable: Up a watch tower in Nicosia overlooking Lefkosa (what's that got to do with cooking though?) how sad was Tonia for "her" Turkish Cypriots etc And my cynicism is not total: Christofias also said something last year about "serving" the Turkish Cypriots in a "reunited" Cypriots And I'd incline to the belief that thousands of GC's genuinely feel that way, wishing the TC's no harm But... Although it may be that majority-rule with safeguards gets the GC vote in reality you won't sell it North Because when Cyprus was briefly a united independent country the Greek Cypriots proved unwilling to sheath their hatred and clan loyalties And if anyone believes the leopard changed his spots, think of the football fans scandal, J-Lo-gate and the manoevers to continue the isolations in the face of Direct Trade

Looks like our friends from accross the border carry on having the upper hand Andre.I personally think its wrong, but then i am in a minority.Northern Cyprus will not move forward as long as people over all see it as a small part of Cyprus without electricity, sewerage, schools etc.Such a shame,i really love the place.Fair reporting, fair play for the North please, Paul.

QUOTE The Greek Cypriots will use every single opportunity to keep Turkish Cypriots isolated. Unfortunately, they still want to control the whole island and oppress Turkish Cypriots as second class citizens This forced population transfer continues in occupied Cyprus today. Since 1974, Turkey has relocated over 160,000 mainland Turks to northern Cyprus. In this clearly illegal, Soviet-style effort to alter the demographics of northern Cyprus, one which the UN has condemned, Turkey has displaced not only the few remaining Greek Cypriots but also Turkish Cypriots, who are often treated as second-class citizens and denied the rights and privileges of the alien settlers from Turkey. As a result, a diminishing number of Cyprus' indigenous Turks remain. Turkey has made it easy for them to obtain visas to emigrate, and they have left en masse, mostly for Britain and Turkey as well as other Mideast countries; some have even escaped through the Green Line and returned to the Greek so

tracer/Msg 11: And so what do you call flooding Paphos and Limassol with 'Rosso Pontis' [Georgian 'Greeks'], who have formed ghettos that even the GC police dare enter? Now, since the crime rate has increased to the point where the GC police can't cope, tourists mugged, beaten and raped by these once 'favoured immigrants', can't you see that RoC is utterly hypocritical in its perennial condemnation of Turkish mainlanders settling in TRNC. At least they're Turks - not like your Rosso Pontis, most of whom bought [fake?] Greek passports for $75! Now, realising your crass mistake, you all wish them 'to Hell and gone'!

Dear Tenakoutou You really should know better - having lived in the Paphos region: 1/ Pontian ( Black Sea ) Greeks were issued Greek passports by the GREEKS - they were welcomed 'home' when the former soviet union was breaking up.. You might be aware that Helmut Kohl did the same with ethnic Germans from the USSR - was that some sort of ethnic imbalance thing, too ?! ;) 2/ The RoC agreed to take some 'Pontian Greeks' - approx 30K lived in Cyprus - that's Three to Five times less than estimates for TR 'imports' and even TCs will tell you that they are outnumbered .. The Pontians would make less tan 5% of the population 3/ Crime ? - yes some Pontians have got a poor reputation - but 'no go' areas .. you're having a larf.. Many Younger Pontians speak Russian / Greek and English and are highly articulate .. I used to employ Pontians - in preference to ANY other workers to make concrete bases for big dishes - they worked hard and well. Hope that clears up any confusion..

BTW that's less than 5% of the 'rump' RoC population - not the whole island .. Lest you doubt my claims by TCs... "We brought over from Turkey more population (settlers) more numerous than our own population." A TC said it .. Sener Levent He's not the only one.. I can find you more - discussing validity of the 'census'

mmmmmm: The method[s] of acquisition of many of the Pontians passports was/is highly questionable - you should know that! Most of them came to Cyprus not speaking Greek - many couldn't speak Russian. I didn't live in Limassol - only worked there briefly [Sheraton Marina] - did you live in Paphos to know what the situation is/was, as regards the Pontians? The crime rate surged to never before known proportions - the GC's have blamed the Pontians for that. With out elaborating, I must say I talked to many tourists who had 'unpleasant run-ins' with them.

re msg 20 >>The method[s] of acquisition of many of the Pontians passports was/is highly questionable - you should know that! << So you *keep* saying.. but can you tell us the conditions necessary to qualify for the passport ? >>Most of them came to Cyprus not speaking Greek - many couldn't speak Russian. << ))))) Of course most of 'em spoke Russian over Greek ..it only took a couple of generations for Stalin to ensure Eastern Ukraine shifted from Ukrainian to Russian as a first language .. WHAT language would a Pontian not knowing Russian / 'Greek' [dialect] speak... ? The crime rate has soured throughout the 'rump' RoC.. when I first lived there folk in Limas(s)ol didn't lock their cars / house doors .. surprising as the Pontians beat me there ! There is a sizeable number of Pontians in Limas(s)ol, too I'm not saying that there aren't bad apples.. just that folks are too quick to label a whole tribe as 'bad' ..not my experience

GCs now tend to blame Poles - [ 'why DID we join the EU ? ' ] who tend to drink ( a lot ) openly in the streets - for crime .. I guess the Pontians must be pleased ;)
