It can only happen in roc.

Makarios Droushiotis has had death threats on line and after investigation by the roc police, decision has been taken not to prosecute those who incite violence openly on the net. What kind of democracy are we joining if we should unite with our cousins in the south.

Can we really expect to be treated equally in the eyes of the law?

Do we really wish to join such a democracy?

And you think that 'justice' is any better in the TRNC ??? You must be aware of the case of Geoff and Mary - nearly 50 appearances in a TRNC court over a few pots of paint and still the case is not settled. I know which court I would prefer to take my chance in !!

I have no doubt that they are as bad as each other. They are both based on the British sytem of justice. The only defence is that TRNC is not recognised so they can do what they like, but an EU country?

Did you read the case about a Sudanese girl who got attacked by 50 GCs and the police just sent her home and took no action against the perpetrators?

What about the fellow called Erkan Egmez, who got picked up from his field while he was working and tortured to admit that he was dealing in drugs? Finally after 10 years they accepted wrongful arrest and imprisonment and paid him some compensation.

This is not about some money or property, this is a life and death situation. Some fanatic can see that as a green light and kill him.

Sorry to say, but as TC I know which one I would not choose.

As a TC, you know that your treatment in a TRNC court would probably be different to that of an 'outsider'.

I have to admit that the case that you have highlighted in your first post is a difficult one. The 'statement' used in the blog is open to interpretation and is not necessarily a direct threat to kill. We all say (and type) things in the heat of the moment - when annoyed, how many of us have said "I will kill him/her".

The RoC police do not have the best of reputations, but across the world, all police forces have their 'bad eggs'. I have had a couple of dealings with the RoC police (driving violations) and on both occasions I found them polite and efficient.

Having attended a couple of civil cases in the 'rump' RoC - where the judge bent over BACKWARDS to ensure I understood what was going on, and that my points were understood - I must say I found the 'rump' RoC court fair.. but I hear of incidents were justice seems VERY drawn out ...

The Police - I got stopped for speeding and' blagged' my way out of it - I had a tourist red plate - I have been a passenger in a car stopped for speeding - the Police lady was a dragon - but polite

As in all Cyprus there's very much a "my cousin knows someone in the department that issues speeding tickets/ planning dept, etc. "

..and sometimes there's not enough accountability?

I couldn't say that the 'north' is any better / worse.. neither 'part' seems to be hot on sorting out issues over unfinished builds / retentions / non issuing of 'deeds' ..

What I can say is that the RoC now has the European Commission and Solvit - a body that helps third nation EU citizens when there are' issues' - more accountability

..and there's the ECHR if all local remedies fail - but in the case of 'the north ' you'd have to 'go after' TR ..

If all those folk who have waited for PTP - esp, those with pre 74 TR/ Foreign deeds took TR to the ECHR.... and had lodged your deeds with the rump 'RoC land registry - I 'll bet that would get some action ....

In the 70s the approx 4 square miles of Episkopi was policed by no less than than my Regimental Police, the Royal Military Police, the Sovereign Base Area Police and the Cypriot Police. A nightmare. Was taken to task by the Cypriot Police for parking on a double yellow line in Dodge City, with drivers door open, and engine running, whilst buying a loaf of bread in a shop and not another vehicle in sight. I convinced them that my tyres were at least 3 inches from the yellow lines, the door was open and the engine was running as I was going fishing, then got in and went fishing ! Subsequently I asked the OC of the Royal Military Police "Why is it that every time I pass a Cypriot Police car they always wave at me and speed off."? He said that my vehicle number had been passed by memo to all police authorities with the recommendation that the vehicle never be stopped as the driver is so simple it is impossible to communicate anything to him !
