Every so often I pick up Cyprus Today, look at the front page and find myself wondering if it`s April 1st. Today is one of those days. I imagine the used car market is about to get pretty crowded as people divest themselves of their large jeeps and people carriers, either that or the number of people who don`t bother with road tax is going to skyrocket. On the broader picture CTP are mega-desperate to "sort out" the Cyprus problem before the next election, I wonder why?

Newscoop,

Would you mind elaborating on the story please for those of us who have to wait a week or more to catch up on the news.

This is obviously the long awaited start to amassing sufficient funds to

bring the country's road network up to war zone standards ! !

It's a fairly lengthy article but the lowlights are:

Road tax for new cars doubles

Road tax for older cars trebles

Driving licence fees up 40-80%

It doesn't mention an effective date so I assume it's immediate as my car tax is due on 1st September....

There is also a call from the Consumers' association chairman for the government to fall on their swords, not before time!

Ah......now I see. Once again they follow exactly what the British Government will be doing with cars from 2010 over here in last few weeks.

The TRNC is becoming more British and European by the day. One day you won't be able to tell the difference!

Are these changes taking effect immeadiatly? You would of thought Cyprus Today would have given that info. Seems its another example of the goverment clawing in the pennies where ever it can. More signs that they are up shit creek without a paddle, no doubt they will be introducing a Tax for breathing soon.

The government here have to repay the pension funds somehow before the next election.

Our old Pajero cost us over 900YTL to tax in May. Its is poorly now(apparently needs new engine). We we're trying to make up our minds if it was worth it.With the new Tax laws it looks as though it's time to have it put down.
