there is a drink made with sambucca that is highly entertaining, and not half as pretentious as the gold stuff...

take a shot glass

fill just under half way with baileys (or some other generic version)

add a splash of green sambucca, then,

add a splash of red sambucca

(or any colours of Sambucca that is offered at the duty free counter in the airport)

and watch what happens...it is beautiful...

before your very own eyes, a kaleidoscope of colour appears, twisting and turning like a real old fashioned kaleidoscope...truly a delight to see...

A little history on Sambucca...

In case you ever wondered why it is traditional to burn this drink with 3 coffee beans...here is why:

Years and years ago, Sambucca was brewed in great long troughs, in barns. Unfortunately, there was no such thing as pest control back then, so when bugs and droppings, rats and dropping fell into the said mixture..it was customary to set alight to this elixir, to rid it of aforementioned (ick

(icky)stuff...by burning off the animals and droppings that had fallen into the mixture. The 3 coffee beans were seen to represent The Father The Son and The Holy Spirit.....

I personally find the history of liqueurs and beer, quite fascinating....each and every one has a different story as to their origins.

Cheers....enjoy your gold leaf Sambucca...if indeed that is what it is.....

(fortunately there are health and hygiene rules these days, so i promise...no rats or rat shit 'should' be found in your fancy shot!)

Luigi Manzi, the first to produce sambuca in Civitavecchia (1851), said that he had chosen that name in memory of the "sambuchelli", or the "acquaioli" ( water and anis sellers) of his native Ischia. We have no reason to doubt his claims, even if - until now - no proof has arisen (the term "sambuchello" does not appear in the dialect dictionaries edited in the 1800's consulted by us). Even the history of the word "extra" is worth a mention, albeit small but relevant.

On the subject of 'strong' drinks I remember a few (quite a few) years ago visiting a bar in Ibiza with a few friends and tried Absinthe for the first time. None of us can remember anything to this day what happened after the 4th shot!

I have a bottle of GOLDSLAGER circa 1992. I once had 2 but opened one in 1993, only had one shot.

Disgusting, so the bottle has remained since then. It does taste of cinnamon or anniseed. YUK!

Hi DD

I will give you 20 TL for your house. I think the others ate too drunk to see a bargain Or should that be a BAR gain for the other members.
