I have read on posts about a Sandfly mesh that is now available. Does anyone know the weave size and price per metre of this mesh so that I can compare it to the one I am bringing over to try. A friend was biten badly last year so barriers against these flies is very important to me. Also, does anyone know where I can buy the PVC component parts to make our own screens? May just try a wooden frame first to see how effective the mesh proves to be. Many thanks

Thanks for that Hatty. They must measure it differently then coz the Uk ones are measured by the threads per inch. One sample I am bringing out with me should give offer solar shading of up to 80% and is 17 x 12 threads per inch and the other one is so small it keeps out pollen! Will hopefully be testing next week. I figure both should work fine with the sandfly coz I think the adult sandly is no more than 2-3 mm in size ( so a google search said at least!). All a learning curve!

The most important thing to remember is to spray mossie screens - from the inside out if using horticultural/agricultural chemicals. If not knowledgeable about these, just use cockroach spray from the supermarket - it is reasonably residual and should be effective for two weeks in this heat. Last night, on National Geographic channel, there was a programme about sandflies and 'Leichmaniasis' - take every precaution against getting bitten by these 'No See Ums'!

Question: Do you use mesh to keep out the bugs whilst still having airflow via the open windows? Question: If you use a fine mesh to stop the smallest of bugs, won't that stop the airflow as well? Its summer and we have gone onto the roof outside to sleep - we hang a mossie net and use a sofa bed under that so that we have a nice cool (beware of the damp) sleep almost every night - the mossies can't get through the net but it reduces the airflow quite considerably. We have "Fly" screens fitted to some rooms in the house and they also reduce airflow. Is there anyway around this - apart from spraying yourself with insect repellant?

I suggest, if you can stand it, running a fan [even on 'Low'] so that you get air circulation while you're zzzzzzzing under the mossie net. 'Bities' don't like flying in circulating air, draughts, or wind. Sandflies will waltz through most mossie nets, 2x2, so it's essential to spray them with 'Permithrin' or, better still, 'Cypermethrin' based sprays. For a quick 'fix', spray them with 'crawling insect - cockroach' spray, as normal fly spray has hardly any residual effect. Best way to treat a mossie net is to mix your chemical in a bucket of water and dunk the net in - take it out almost straightaway after [because modern mossie nets are nylon - so non absorbent] and hang out to drip dry before erecting it over your bed. Hope this helps!

Hi Masaki63 - can you tell me where in UK you have purchased both meshes that you have mentioned - especially interested in the very fine one. We already have sliding fly screens fitted on bedroom windows but find that because they are sliding they let a certain amount of the insects through. We are planning to make our own that will be fixed to the whole window so we can have the windows open at night.

Surely spraying all this stuff on your nets before you get in them is bad for you, plus they are generally a very powerful smell, I certainly don't like to go in a room for a few hours after I've sprayed it (when I'm debugging, not kill mosquito's) I have the plug in things, and nets I've stapled to the window frames that seem to do the trick.

Masaki, What we did was to get some of the thin meshy type stuff that you put on the garden to keep plants warm during the winter frosts (you know the sort of thing?). Strangely enough we found it in Mr. Pound - don't think they'll be much call for it here! Anyway, hubby stuck that around the bedroom windows, over the mozzie screens, with sticky back velcro and that's done the job perfectly. It still allows the air to flow through, and a spray around the bedroom 1/2 before we go to bed at night with the fly spray, we've never been bitten since. It's also great if you only have shutters and no curtains like us. We can leave the shutters open all the time and no one can see in! Since it's stuck on with velcro it also means it'll be easy to remove when the colder months arrive again.

I read with interest all the home made fly screen ideas including the use of seriously dangerous fly/bug liquids.I wanted to get away from using these products as they attack the fly's nervous system(hence the spinning on their backs when the spray enters them).Fly spray was blamed on the death of David Niven, who developed Motor Neurons Disease-a debilitating desease of the nervous system, because he was a fly spray fanatic. I too tried "home made" screens from voil, mesh etc and found they disintigrated after 12mnths. Finally we had a fly screen company in to price for the real thing.what a difference!Smart, neat, easy to clean. We have the roller type. The family which makes the screens are English they are new owners of MR FLY,their work is excellent, proffessional and the two fitters are so helpful and obliging. The screens were not the cheapest quote, but "you get what you pay for".we are delighted with the workmanship and the written guarantee. TRY MR FLY !tel 05338809490
