Peace and Freedom Day here is marked by thuggish 'Keep Them Nervous' marches and demos in the South. On previous occasions TRNC registered vehicles have been vandalised at these times...

Just not worth the hassle.

Not worth the hassle any day but today being a bank holiday here it is an excuse for everyone to take a trip to do some shopping. So Metehan will probably be chaos.

Maybe we should all remember ALL those people who lost their lives, from both sides.

Mustafa,

The point of the thread was purely to advise that there may be problems in heading south on this particular day.

Of course the deaths that preceded 20th July 1974 and after are to be regretted and remembered.

We are off shortly, will have lunch then listen to speeches, have a beer, then enjoy the air show.

This is a day to be remembered and be both happy and sad at the same time.

I know exactly where I was when the intervention started, in Carter Bequest Hospital in Middlesbrough recovering from knee surgery and saw the news on TV. Anyone else remember the day?

re msg 7

I was staying at my uncle's house nr Manchester and 'cheered' when I saw the TR paratroopers landing on the news .. I thought the GCs 'deserved it'.. [ this was before the reports of deaths, etc ]

VERY few folk 'deserved' to be forcibly removed / coerced from their homes.. [ I include events long before 20th July ]

I was 15 and I am much older and wiser now..

Having read the accounts of escalating ethnic violence against the Turkish Cypriot communities in the press over the previous few weeks I do remember where I was...

I was in Aldershot, watching Mike Nicholson reporting from Cyprus and thinking 'Thank God, at last someone is acting' and also thinking of the shame that fell on the UN and other 'Peace Keepers' who were forced to sit on their hands when it all kicked-off in the preceding period.

We went South today and I got the impression no one gave a monkey's about what was going on North of the green line, they were far to busy getting on with their lives as some on this board ought to do!

My brother in law works over the south and he was telling me last night how his boss had the radio playing all day with the Greek version of events, They never spoke all day but his boss just kept making nasty comments about the turks. Yes they are bothered, maybe not in the shops but in their hearts they still believe they are the victims in all this.
