No other player has come on the pitch and changed the team/game so much in so little time, other then FABERGAS.

Then again,I would say that as an ARSENAL fun.

The question may be that, at club and international level, has anyone else maintained performances which outshine Messi ? No one has been consistent enough to spring to my mind. What about a year with no award as that might burst the overflated egos displayed by some so called stars this year.

Surely in a world cup year performance in this competition must be included, which would rule out the under performing Gerrard.

world cup was only a hand full of games and cannot be a yardstick for selecting footballer of the year..

one has to take into account the performance for the whole season..local league and Champions league/UEFA League

Did'nt say it should be a yardstick for selecting footballer of the year....but if you cannot play on the big stage in the major tournaments then you cannot be considered to be footballer of the year !!

World cup is the largest shop window for unknown footballers to make an impression and get transferred to a big club.

Good players are already playing for big clubs and they don't need to prove anything at WC to anyone

and most important they don't want to pick up an injury that would jeopardize their club career

Going on the World Cup - which lets face it was this year's major competition...

The best player was the Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas... his saves were stupendous and in the final prevented a Dutch win against the run of play...

Attackers... David Villa for me, not for his performance in the final but how they got there... If you want to talk about a likeness to George Best, then he knocked spots off Lionel Messi who by his standards had a poor World Cup - like so many who had been vaunted as 'magicians' only to give very little hint of their innate talents.

I think the best two attackers in the World Cup were Villa and Forlan. Messi did have quiet World Cup but his performances all season will easily make him World Footballer of the year. As for comparing him to George Best ??? ....Best was the most talented player i have ever had the pleasure to watch and Messi is not far behind him.....maybe another two years and he will be better !! He is playing in the best footballing team in the world and with players like Iniesta and Xavi around him , he can only get better .I agree with you Gav...... Casillas did have an excellent World Cup but goalkeepers are rarely remembered unless it's a penalty shoot out !

Messi for me, he's easily stood out as the best...

As for the world cup, too short a tournament to act as a yardstick... many players have been bought on thr back of performances in the world cup etc and flopped....
