We have just returned from a few days away in the Karpaz, where we came across 5 lovely donkeys who are currently being looked after by a lovely British couple. The donkeys were in a very sorry state when they first came accross them 2 weeks ago. They are domesticated and had been half starved and were in very poor condition, they were so desperate for food that they had taken to eating their shelter. 2 weeks on and they are still very thin and not in the best of health but some kind soul has offered the donkeys some land in Kumyali where they will have access to fresh water. Now all that is needed is donations so that fences can be put up around the land and a new shelter can be built for them. The British couple are digging deep to keep the donkeys going at the moment, paying for their vets bills and food, but of course its a struggle for them.

to be cont.....

If any of you kind C44 members would be prepared to make a donation towards their care and up keep, and also towards their new home I am sure that Camilla, Anne, Harry, William and George would be eternally grateful.

Perhaps you wouldnt mind being a drop off point for any donations Lilli, that would be a great help. The couple who are looking after the donkeys really need financial assistance more than anything at the moment.

I think that each fence panel is 35tl, each delivery of hay is approx 150tl. Vets bills for 5 adult donkeys dont come cheap either! One of the donkeys is blind, all of them are suffering with parasites, having been left with filthy or no water and no food for so long they, in the middle of a football pitch sized enclosure which has no trees, shrubs or anything. Unfortunately the previous owner is not interested in their well being and has handed full responsibilty for them over to David and Margaret, which is why they have to be moved from where they are.

My colleague is going out to stay at the Karpaz in 10 days time, so it would be great if we gather as many donations in that time as possible so that she can take them with her to help out as soon as possible.

Lois and Ismail Cemal organised four men from the village of Buyukkonuk to go to the donkey sanctuary in Sidmouth,Devon to have some experience with caring for them.Am sure they were having an enclosure built somewhere in Kumyali, maybe they could get together .

Please get them to ring Lois up ,she will help.I am still looking for their telephone number to give you,put Buyukkonuk Eco Village on Google ,it might just give some information.

All I have is http://www.ecotourismcyprus.com this is at Delcraft I think, their craft shop.

Someone will have the phone number to give you who might have been recently.

The couple who are caring for these 5 donkeys have been in touch with the lady who runs the donkey sactuary in Sidmouth, as they knew nothing themselves about looking after donkeys. I think that she has offered them some good advice about what they need, I will send them an email and get them to contact lois and Ismail. Im not sure how easy it to put different donkeys in together, I remember reading a post on here about the donkeys near Escape beach and that they wouldnt accept a new donkey who had to be taken back out of the enclosure as it was being attacked.

I will keep this post to the top for as long as possible, and hope that the kind members will be able to dig in to their pockets for another good cause.

Back to the top....no interest at all so far despite lots of people reading this post. David and Margaret could really do with as much help as possible in their quest to save and rehome these lovely donkeys.

Thanks

Lilli - if you don't mind being the collection point for dosh - we'll be there in 2 weeks and will be happy to contribute. Does anything vet/pet wise need bringing over from England for the donkeys? x

Karen,

The responses you have generated is more than we every dreamed of. It is giving us a boost to keep going! George, William, Harry, Camilla and Anne send their love. We have yet to teach them how to use a computer; God knows what they would make of it! They will never know how many friends they have.

A kind Farmer arrived just after you left and gave us 15 Bales. We couldn't believe the excitement from the Donkeys; it was as though they were cheering at the sight of fresh Hay!

We could do with Lice Powder or if there is a tablet that we can administer. Anything we give orally we place in side a goudged out cucumber. Works a treat.

I'll go to our saddlery - we haven't heard of a tablet but I'll look for something. We've used the powder on our wintered horse before (I'm itching at the thought) and it worked a treat (but maybe thats cos he was not lice ridden and just laden with his winter fur!!!!!:-0). Anyway if there is anything else just let me know, I'll leave with Lilli or we can deliver if you leave your number with her.

Good on you for taking care of the famous 5. We should start a facebook page for them!!!

Every good wish.

Permethrin is the drug component that you are going to need - I'll see if I can find the translated equivalent in Turkish but I'll still bring some over. The following should be a guide (for gee-gees of course) but it may just help in diagnosing. Don't know how you'll get close enough to rub the powder in mind......

Back to the top please.....any donations gratefully received for these lovely donkeys. We have so far had an offer of Lice Powder and Fence posts.

If there is anyone on here who lives near Yeni Erenkoy and can offer help with hay or unwanted fruit and vegetables that would just be fantastic. They seem to eat anything!

Donkey Keeper is the person who is looking after them. They are located down on the turning to Golden Beach, but will be moved as soon as possible to Kumyali. I am located in Alsancak at the Business centre/Wise Property just past Atakara as you head in to Alsancak village. I would be very happy to accept donations for the Donkeys to pass on to Donkey Keeper.

Smudge, Greetings.

What we will need shortly are Halters. We will have to introduce the Donks to Halters before we move them so as not to disturb them too much. At the moment though it is a case of gaining their trust to actually touch them; but we are getting there.

The current problem is competing with the boys; the girls are coming in and out of season so there are more important things on their minds at the moment!

Regards

YeniTom, Greetings.

Yes we are the Brit couple looking after the Donks.

We are desparately trying to erect a perimeter fence at their new location which has natural shade, fresh running water and available donkey food. This Paradise has been nicknamed 'Donkey Valley' and would like to reveal the site once we have completed the build.

Thanks for your interest. Donations will be appreciated

Tony27 if you are in the area then our office is in Alsancak just along from Atakara supermarket. I would be very happy to take donations on behalf of the Donkey Keeper. We have someone going out to Yeni Erenkoy for the weekend next weekend so if any one else would like to donate before then I am sure they would be delighted.

Hi Lilli

I will ask Mark to drop off 100tl to you next week when he is passing, for the donkeys, and i'll try to pursuade Mark to add to it with some of his hard earned cash too. (perhaps to pay for the next hay delivery)

Marcos, when will you be going? the only reason I ask is that someone has offered fence posts and they need to be transported there...it might just work out that you could squeeeze them in to your van?

In the mean time to you all of you C44 members its not too late to make a donation!

Many thanks

Pass the post office on your left hand side heading from Girne city centre towards Pia Bella Hotel/Karakum there is a turning on the left just before the state hospital which will be sign posted for the ampitheatre and the Ezic Chicken Peanut Bar, basically its right down on the waters edge....someone else might be able to give better directions than I can!

Just want to say a big thanks to Ali who owns the new "Maggie's Cafe" in Karakum. Ali has promised a donation AND the promise of fruit, hay and vegetables. Thanks Ali. Also we require a fence post driller to assist in the drilling of fence post holes for the Donkeys new home in the Karpaz area. Can any one assist please...??? We are hoping to get these holes drilled ASAP.

Just returned from a wonderful day out with Donkey Keeper and his lovely lady. They made us so very welcome. The proposed "Donkey Valley" will be a great place for the famous 5 when we can get the fence finished. Donkey Keeper desperately needs the use of a Fence post digger to assist in the digging of the fence post holes.

The Famous 5 were a delight to meet and tucked in to the fruit and veg we brought them with much vigour - thanks to Supreme supermarket in Karakum for the kind donation. The Water and Honey dew melons went down a treat and the cabbages were eaten with great delight. The Donkeys really need feeding up, and any donations of fruit and veg would be much appreciated. We would also like to thank Colin and Hilary in Arapkoy and Jo and Mark for their very kind cash donations. The good news is that Jo and Mark, The Kibris Line Dancers and Myself have all offered to sponsor a Donkey. Once again a BIG thank you to all who have assisted especially Donkey Keeper.

Tinkie, We are getting there slowly. We have now opened dedicated UK and TRNC bank accounts specifically for the donkeys. If anyone is still wanting to support us I can supply the detail.

We have cleaned out ALL the holes, positioned the fence posts, and the fencing is bought; we are now hoping for donations to cover the concrete. Same time we are buying in the right hay, vitamins and protein pellets (they love them).

Sincere regards to all who have supported us; youve not been forgotten.
