Just over three weeks ago Korky went missing. He has not turned up despite doing everything possible to find him. I can accept that he is probably not going to miraculously reappear. However, my other cat, Luca, absolutely adored Korky and they were like brothers. For the first week Luca refused to eat and just howled. He now eats occasionally but will not go out of the house. He is not a brave cat but Korky was always there to 'hold his hand'!! For the last few days Luca has become extremely clingy and seems to have sunk into a major depression!! I have thought about getting a rescue kitten but it could go one of two ways: either he will love it or kill it. He wants Korky, so what should I do?? I know I sound like a complete lunatic but if you understand cats you will understand this post!

Poor Luca.

He is going to have to re adjust either way, getting over his grief or getting used to another buddy.

We have experienced both options and he WILL get over it either way, although getting another kitten will certainly take his mind (and yours) off your loss!

My lovely Claire,

Cats are just like humans in many respects. They like their routine, security and love and do have feelings. Most though do live in the here and now. But I doubt whether the video of Eckhart Tolle would help although some cats do enjoy television!

Loss of appetite is usually a sign of illness. Have you had it checked out by the vet? Vaccinations etc?

Try this link to see if it helps:

One option is to get a new cat which wouldnt be so much a replacement as cats ,like us , have their own distinct personalities, but could perhaps provide some companionship..

The other thing is your cat prolly needs alot of comfort right now, cuddling, playing, stuff like that.I hope you find Korky, whenever our cat goes missing hes always hiding somewhere nearby...

Thank you for your kind and sensible replies. Deep down I think the best idea is to get a weeny kitten for him. He is eating more now, he is actually waking me up in the night because he wants food! John, I agree 100% cats have feelings and it is very upsetting to observe it but don't worry about illness, Luca is fine, just depressed!! God I wish Korky would just walk in the door!

Not a kitten, but a mature cat round the same age as your one. One that is used to other cats !!

And lots of treats...... cat-nip mouse, chicken, tuna etc

Find one of a similar size and colouring ( although they do say cats only see in black & white).

And when you've done all that......sods law, Korky will return and you'll have 3 cats !!!

Good luck.

As I said, he is a complete coward so a mature cat wouldn't work. Where we live there are plenty of cats around and he only has to see one or hear a catfight and he's straight back into the house, looking out of the window!! Generally cats find it easier to accept a kitten into their home rather than an adult cat, from my experience. But I do appreciate your help x

Thanks. Luca himself was a KAR kitten, 5 years ago. Korky was also an abandoned kitten. If I do decide to get a kitten, I will definitely get one from KAR.

At the moment, I have a 5 month old who gave birth far too early but her milk dried up. So her kittens died. She is a really loving and intelligent cat but I can't keep her as I feed 15 already. She lived at Silver rocks. I picked her up 'cos she was obviously ill, Now , after a course of antibiotics ,she is on top form. She is going in to be neutered and if you could give her a home that would be great. I am paying for everything neutering etc. She learns fast but you have to show her who is boss.

ClaireCat44:

When I lived in Northern Queensland, the guys in the next door flat used to smoke the 'green, green grass of home' and [when toking up] used to exhale into a plastic bag, then grab a dog, or cat, and stuff its head into the bag for a coupla three seconds - er, several times. You should have heard the mutt, or pussy, sing to the guitar!

That must be where the 'Owl and the Pussycat' rhyme came from: '......the owl looked up at the stars above and sang to his little guitar - 'Oh Pussy, oh Pussy, oh Pussy, my love - what a beautiful pussy you are, you are...'

Well..........you did ask....... ! ! !

Be careful, he might just hate another cat or kitten. My old girl did not take very kindly to us introducing a three legged intruder. Two years down the line, she still hisses and spits if she only walks by her.

Lovely CC44

Go catch a mouse and let it go in the house.

That'll test the cats boredom levels.

Hope the little fluffy bundle gets over it.

Rowlo, thanks for that. As you have never met me, nor my cats, i would like to invite you to do so. Then you can see with your own eyes who is depressed!

ClaireCat,

We went through the same thing as you are your cat are just last year. We had two cats that found us both of a similar age, and one went missing. The other one was so down in the dumps and didnt even want to be with us or let us stroke her etc. In the end we got a resuce cat from KAR which was a similar age and she is great now and back to herself. I do have to say though it did take her about 3 months to get over losing her play mate and getting used to the new one.

Hang in there though, your cat will be okay it just takes time.

Good luck Claire! x

Thank you, Jayne. I've decided to get a kitten from KAR. Even if Luca hates it at least it will have a loving home with us.

Hi ClaireCat44!

Don't 'write off' Korky just yet, cos you never know........

Our favourite Australian bard will tell you why.....but, BE WARNED, this 'link' is definitely NOT suitable for prudes! - ENJOY!!!!
