Dear Friends,

I have rented a car on the dark side and driven it over to the sunny side many times during the day at the car crossing clostest to Nicosia.

Next week I will be crossing around midnight.

Is it possible to buy insurance at that hour?

Is the office open 24/7?

Is this called the Pyla Border Crossing ( one which is closest to Nicosia )

Last but not least, I understand that I can't rent a car here, buy insurance for the Greek side and use it over there, is this true?

Thanks everyone!

In Cyprus, North or South, ANYTHING can be arranged for a 'small cash consideration'!

we were advised that we would be unable to get insurance after 10 p.m. at Metehan so to be on the safe side we asked our car company to organise it for us. Thought there'd be a problem. We arrived, car, south insurance, north insurance, all sorted and no probs on crossing. Hope this helps a little - Pyla may be different. Can get you the car company if you want.

Thanks Smudge,

I usually rent with economycarrentals.com, this time I am coming back from the south late at night and just wanted to know if the car-crossing in Nicosia would be open and if I could buy the insurance at that hour, around 11 or 12 am...

I do not know for sure but I would be very surprised if you could get car insurance at that time. Pyla (Beymardu) crossing is not in Nicosia, it is near Larnaca. The car crossing in Nicosia is Metahan. You cannot take a North Cyprus hire car to South Cyprus. Hope this helps.

No prob John - we used 'yourway car hire' (PETSAS was their contact at the airport). We were doing the Paphos route and got to the border just after 10.00 p.m. Managed the whole transfer through to Alsancak in just over 2 hours without breaking speed limits and roads were quiet. We did use economy car rentals prior to this.

Hope you manage ok and have a good journey through.

Thanks Smudge...I'll be leaving Paphos at around 9 pm, do I have any chance of getting back to our side through any crossing?

I appreciate your help, John

Smudge,

If I rent the car on the Greek side during the day and pre-arrange the insurance, will I be good?

Do you think that will work?

I'll take the car in the afternoon and I want to return late at night.

thank you!

John 1234,

You ARE allowed to rent a car in the North and take it to the south - but this is down to whether or not the hire firm allows you to take the car across.

If they do allow it, then all you have to do is take out greek insurance from the border and that is it - the hire firm will give you the relevant documents to be able to do this.

However, most TRNC hire companies wont allow the car to cross due to the chance that if its crashed then it may not return or fear of damage etc.

Also forgot to state - it depends on whether the hire firm's KASKO insurance is valid in the south. It is this KASKO policy that protects the vehicle fully comprehensively if crossed to the south.

If you take out Greek insurance, this wont cover the car you are driving, and so if you have an accident, who will pay for the damages incurred? Thats, unless the KASKO is valid in the south.

A confusing but good insurance system.

It isnt possible for GAN to provide third party cover for the whole island, as they cannot insure cars in the TRNC - if there was to be an accident they wouldnt be able to investigate etc so wouldnt be able to pay out.

It is probably the case that GAN provides fully comp cover for the car only, across the whole island.

I.e. the damages to the car itself will be covered but third parties that are hit would not be covered, and third party cover is obviously the bare minimum.

Its the same in the TRNC. You can get a full island-wide KASKO policy which would cover your Trnc registered car for damages to the insured car that are incurred - but will not cover the costs to gc registered cars.

hope that helped.
