We have been looking into NC quite a lot. Came across these comments. What do you think.

Because of the war in 1974 the North has trade sanctions and no direct flights - there was a "boom" in the north a few years ago when it was rumoured the island would get into the EU, so thousands scrambled to buy off plan before "the prices went through the roof"

The cypriots are experts at cheating you - a bit unfair i know, but the most ponient thing i heard is "the Cypriots are lovely people, until you involve money"

The pleace is a real shit tip litter dumped everywhere, dirty litter strewn beaches, unless you want to fork out 15 quid to use a private beach - the government have spent no money on improving the infrascructure, so there are no real incentives for tourists to come (plus add the having to land in Turkey when you come from the UK) you'll see locals chucking bags of litter out of their cars as they drive by this will really piss you off very quickly.

And there is more.

Save it.

I don't think you'll like it here.

Try somewhere else.

Cant speak for the money side of things, but you do read of plenty of horror stories. But bad news always travels quicker than good.

Whilst I have been visiting (5/6 years) there has been huge increase in building works, everyone selling land to developers ( hence the goat farmers son running around in Range Rover Sport) who in turn sell the properties to foreigners....... the demand hasn't kept up and increasing number of part built properties, presumably waiting for buyers to finance the completion. Doesn't look very nice though.

The locals could certainly learn a thing or two about keeping the counntry tidy, experience litter where ever you go. The public beach's i visited were littered with broken glass, plastic bottles, bbq remains, cig butts, really not very nice ......all evidence that someone had a good time but then they just leave all litter behind to the detriment of other beach users ....frustrating as so unneccesary.

Bill,

There was a building boom in NC from 2004 but the govt have effectively killed the goose that laid the golden egg with their corrupt and discriminatory property Regarding market and the lack of effective laws to protect people.

Regarding Cypriots and cheating....does your comment apply to ALL Cypriots or just Turkish Cypriots?

I would exercise caution on both sides of the island , as I would anywhere in the world.

Take people as you find them.

North Cyprus does have a real problem regarding litter and tipping, and there doesn't seem to be much political will to sort it.

Many places are a real mess.and I genuinely believe that the "locals" have a mindset that allows them not to see the litter and rubbish !

Many would find chaingbill's 'language' + the entire contents his posting aptly descriptive!

It's long past time the government pulled a few work gangs [read 'chain-gangs'] out of Lefkosa prison and set them on to clean 'Polythene Island' from top to bottom - east to west!

Unfortunately the comments are not surprising are they? I'd be interested to know where they were posted. Shows just what the reputation of the TRNC is. Anyone know what the government thinks about it?

What a lot of people fail to realise is that Cyprus as a whole is a very simple place, This is why a lot of people come here , then they seem to pick up on every little imperfection they can find and dwell on it which, is very sad, yes the builders are unorganised and over spend etc and in turn shag you for your dough, as they cant find any other solution as the banks shag everyone with their high interest rates which again they cant help because they are also unorganised. So the moral of the story is: don't get shaged and get a life !! Rent a place keep your dough in the bank and pay the rent from the interest or if your unhapopy with the rubbish organise a cleaning group of good samaritons etc.. Think positive and even negative situations can be enjoyed, but being a couch potato and minging about every man and his dog is not going to get anyone anywhere ever !! It will just kill your soul and all the souls around you. Now thats sad eekkkk

The best and most accurate advice I have seen on this forum for a long time. I would agree with your summary. Most people are miserable because of their experiences of buying in the TRNC and being "shagged" as you put it, of their life savings.

The island is a lovely place to live so minimise the risk of being "shagged" by renting. You then have the best of both worlds. Your money will still be in the bank if ever the laws change to give protection to buyers (doubtful to many golden eggs still being laid) or you have the money to move on to pastures new when you wish.

chiangbill,

it is not clear if you only seek confirmation of the stories you heard,

and there is some truth in all those reports,

but north cyprus also has unique pluses if you can appreciate them

for unspoilt free beaches strike east, especially from tatlisu onwards

and much of the karpaz coast too,

though the east is often painfully undeveloped even by local standards

and country drivers get frustrated by having to wait for sheep and goats to cross

two observations that equally apply to southern and eastern europe in general:

we in the uk had our brains battered for years by "new life in the sun" teleprogs

but it's not always so simple especially for people of basic means, there are problems

the locals naturally see foreigners as having enough wealth to be mobile,

indeed, throughout south and east europe many expect a slice of the action,

...are you really so surprised?

thanks to the '74 landings north cyprus is peaceful: trade may be freed in december

msg 14 thanks for being understanding and I genuinely feel for the poor sods who lose their life savings to a bunch of gypsies. But theres no room for mistakes any more, not like the old days so I would suggest people think 10 times b4 tissing their life savings up the wall.

You have to 'take places as they are'....

TRNC is a special, magic place, full of lovely people. Don't criticise the place...enjoy it. Sure things may not be perfect - they aren't anywhere - just enjoy the time there.

We have for well over ten years!

Oh, and if you stay at The Almond, there is no littler of any kind - 'cos it's spotless!

We would NEVER NEVER buy property in a foreign country, we have too many horror stories.

After all, we are only trying to find out what's like there. The Good. The Bad & The Ugly. We can't just come for a quick vist, to have a look around. If we come we stay.

Litter is one of the downfalls of northern cyprus.

It could be so simple to keep the place litter free.

one man could be employed to patrol the beach areas

a few hundred lira each time litter was dropped would soon put an end to the mess.

I still love northern cyprus cant wait until october when I will be over again.

I agree but we are not really just talking about litter, its more about the mountains of rubbish left by builders that are real blots on the land.

Best description i have heard to describe the TRNC is:

"pockets of beauty amongst lots of shite"

Hi Bradus

"Pockets of beauty amongst lots of shite" - I can just see that slogan plastered all over London Underground in the TRNC's next tourism campaign.

Thanks for giving me a much needed laugh

Bill,

You will find Bare Hill very noisy.

If not from the road or the builder's yard next door then from the owner's dog tied to a tree behind the studio apartments barking incessantly at night.

That's if it's still alive!

Our internets been down. OK I will by a Catapult. Will get one from local market. But we are used to barking dogs. there were hundreds in Goa. And they all barked.

Yes it does tell you something,

and that is that property was cheaper than just about everywhere else except Turkey and now Spain ,the only other choice is Bulgaria if you dont mind 6 foot snow drifts after November.

Have been visiting TRNC for 5years now and loved it so much we purchased a 3 bed apartment with no problems. yes there is a lot of rubbish but it has improved from 5 years ago. Perhaps if we paid exhorbitant council taxes like we do in UK all the beaches would be in prestine condition. So please stop moaning and realise that TRNC are behind the times and if you own a property join in a litter pick as we have.

Message23 - Brit expats( with a few exceptions) are the real problem in TRNC ( as in many other countries) not litter or any other aspect of the place you all keep whinging about.

I used to claim you would all spoil it as you did the south and Spain etc.

Unfortunately this has now happened but it's interesting reading your views on this forum.

I would be grateful if someone would publish a list of restaurants, bars, beaches etc not frequented by ex pats so that when we come out on holiday we don't have to listen to your drivel.

I presume you like acting the troll.

If you really want to get away from the Brits, then head for Lefkosa, but I get the impression that in truth you would probably prefer the bars, etc frequented by the Brits.
