Groucho,

I thought that you'd be dying to know this -

David Whitfield was from 'Ull originally, and later on had a house called Cara Mia in Kikella, one of Hull's western suburbs.

The name was written in wrought iron on the gates, and in the lounge he had a bar, over the top of which was a wrought iron stave, & the musical notation for the opening bar from Cara Mia...

Tasteful huh?

these singer who sang with the big bands had to have big voices to be herd above the band. the singers of today wouldn't be able to pull it off.

Keith Caley - are you from 'ull - how do you know Kirkella - do you know Swanland?

I remember my mother singing:

'Katie, Katie, give me your answer, do!

I'm half crazy, all for the love of you!

We can't afford a carriage, for us to have our marriage,

But you'd look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle made for two!'

and

'We will gather lilacs in the Spring, again!'

Tenakoutou. Don't worry mate. I recalled it as daisy but did not post and I am absolutely certain my brain is always at half mast or worse in any climatic conditions and it could easily have been Katie. Your post sparked fond memories as my mother used to sing it too !

Mums eh, God love 'em - never quite get the lyrics right

Daisy, Daisy give me your answer do.

I'm half crazy all for the love of you.

It won't be a stylish marriage, I can't afford a carriage.

But you'll look sweet, Upon the seat,

Of a bicycle made for two.

Michael, Micheal, here is your answer true.

I'm not crazy all for the love of you.

There won't be any marriage, if you can't afford a carriage.

'Cause I'll be switched, if I get hitched,

on a bicycle built for two!

Tenakoutou,

Blimey - MY mother used to sing that!

I wonder if we're related

& yes, I do know Swanland - not that I lived over that way when I was little, it was far too posh for the likes of me!

Actually, that reminds me of this old East Riding of Yorkshire joke...

If Tha's from Yorkshire, Tha'll know Bishop Burton (note for readers - it's a place name!)

Know him? - Know him? - He married us!

Didnt have hit parade when I was born, but if they did I guess it would have been Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields or George Formby, or so I have been reliably informed, threads like this really hurt :-(
