Once again we see that the Olympic Games in London 2012 will not embrace the ideals of its founders and thus live by its own creed: The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part. Today it is with regret that we at the Girne Rehabilitasyon Merkezi – Cheshire Home learn that taking part is not for all and that taking part is not a priority. We have been asked by our own governing council, Cheshire Homes International based in London, to see if we can help and facilitate the needs of any disabled athletes who may like to take part in the Paralympics 2012. After investigation we have today been informed by International Paralympics Committee in Bonn that they will only accept entrance from United Nations recognised nations. Disability hurts and it does not discriminate who it hurts. It could be any one of us, today, tomorrow or next week. Let us hope it is does not hurt anyone on that committee making such decisions. Is this not a case of the Paralympics

Mist from post... my last comments... Is this not a case of the Paralympics Committee using discrimination again the very people they wish to help! A comment has already been made… how would London like it if a number of wheelchair athletes protest outside the very games they have been barred from competing in with the world’s media watching!!! In modern Europe most able bodied humans have some sort of choice and freedom of movement… in a modern Europe as part of a forward looking 21st century is it now time to show a greater understanding of peoples needs!

Msg 5 - Quarmby: Of course they have! No athletes from the TRNC have ever been allowed to compete in international sports - that's what embargoes are about. I think what Scruffdog is saying is that these embargoes should not apply to disabled sportsmen and women, who have enough to put up with. Did you know there's a wheelchair basketball league in the TRNC? The Olympic movement (and particularly the Paralympic movement) should be about inclusion, not exclusion. I expect the whatsit to hit the fan over this one - can you imagine a gazillion disabled people picketing the IPC headquarters in Bonn? Vision of the IPC: "To Enable Paralympic Athletes to Achieve Sporting Excellence and Inspire and Excite the World" Yeah, right!

Bloody disgusting. I wonder whether a question along the lines of, 'Why have the disabled athlete's from the TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) have been discriminated against from participating in the Paralympics because of their birth place?' E-mailed to appropriate Media outlets would do any good. The 'Daily Mail' (not my rag) are quite good at taking on a 'cause-celeb' and an email to BBC Radio 4, 'You & Yours' might take it up. Any ideas or further suggestions anyone? Richard

thank you all for your comments... as msg 6 states... these poor poeple have enough problems of their own... why drop more on them by poeple who should know better... is it not the duty of the able to help those who cannot help themselves!!!! It is time to stop sweeping porblem under the carpet of 'oh the UN does not allow the TRNC sing to its songs'. What is very maddening and make us more up-set, is that an international protocol was signed, underwritten by the UN for disabled people, our C/Home president was in London to sign this document and it was signed in the name of the TRNC and recognised by the WHO at the UN!!!!!! Wheels as they say within wheels!!!
