Just got back from a lovely meal at "Stroll Inn" only to find they are pumping concrete at 10 p.m. I phoned the police and they agreed that work should stop at 7 p.m. The police were told the vicinity of the pumping but they did not bother to come. I blocked their exit at 10.20 p.m. but the police still did not come. I was very tempted to shoot their tyres out ( I do have a licence) but was advised by my family not to ( spoil sports), so I let them pass. If they try it next time I probably will ( it will be worth it).

I've been slap bang in the middle of Lapta road works for over 3 months.... Work before 6am and after 9pm has been the norm during all that time... Wouldn't mind if I thought it meant the work would get finished earlier, but looks no nearer finishing than ever! When my parents were here, my Dad did go out n have a go and they stopped, but I can't do that every morning and every night, just winds me up and get no closer to any sleep! Seems like the work hours rules are very flexible...... Good luck to you!

Hi Sideways I do understand your beeing upset at workers pumping concrete at 10pm but have you considered that when your house was built the same situation might have occured? Concrete cannot be poured during the day in hot weather because it would dry too quikly and not set, resulting in a very week structure. It is common in hot country to pour late in the day, very often up to midnight. I am sure you often noticed concrete lorries out at night and wondered what they were doing, now you know. The police are aware of this and I can assure you they would never intervene. Be patiente and think of the people who are working and would rather be home with the family.

Hi P I'd have been happy if concrete pumping was being done at 10pm. A few years ago during the boom, this was happening regularly after midnight, into the small hours or even just before dawn. There has always been a law about this & it's never been enforced. We used to ring the police & they didn't give a toss.

The old CTP govt. introduced quite strict laws regarding working times, including no work at all on Sundays. The new UBP govt. rescinded a lot of these restrictions as soon as they gained power. I'll be honest, I haven't a clue as to when work is permitted and not permitted now. I assume it's more or less a free-for-all. If there are laws that still apply, then I suspect the present govt. aren't that keen on enforcing them.

I cant beleive what I'm reading.......coming from ones that spent most their lives in UK where there are road works day and night. You might not have lived next to/nearer to those works, but that doesnt mean they never took place.

No concrete should be poured if the temperature reached 32 degrees. For once it sounds as if a builder is actually working to standards. On big pours our guys set up at 6 or 7pm then complete 4 or 5am.

yorgozlu, i'm with you. People just have to complain, there is either too much or not enough work being done, as rcroton points out, concrete should not be poured if the temperature is too high, otherwise the builder will be accused of shoddy workmanship. If Sideways would just accept that work needs to be done and lets the guys get on with it, it would be finished sooner and he can have his peace back.

Agree with Esentepe - ok when it was done for you, but now you're finished and settled complain about the others who are doing just the same ? What about the ones who were disturbed by your works ?

well... what a load of wingers......I've been here for 10 years, an xbuilder, who would like to work in the blazing sun during the summer, you cannot concrete in high degrees, as it will crack up drying so quickley NOW ....have a thought for the workers, starting at 7am till sometimes midnight, living in apporling conditions (in green houses) and getting very little wages ( your pension is double the wages) so when you winge about workers working late at night , sitting on you verander with a glass of wine, these guys have NOTHING.......i MEAN NOTHING........ACCEPT IT.......

Well thanks for most of your replies. You have just sent tourism in North Cyprus down a few more pegs. In Turkey they build in Winter. I designed and had my place built in the winter because I agree that concrete needs to dry slowly. The law does state that machinery should not be operated after 7 p.m. but of course you must all agree that breaking the law is O.K.

Sideways Not everybody is as lucky as you were, being able to choose when your house was built. Are you suggesting that builders should stop working during the summer?

Considering all that has been said I do think it is a moan too far in this case. In my opinion the biggest problem with cement mixers is the way the drivers dump what is left anywhere they feel like it and that is fly tipping which you cannot pick up and move. I have seen this twice in our small area and they have been stopped by residents but no doubt local plod could not care less about this either.

If you see mixer trucks either being washed out or surplus concrete being dumped, then ring the company concerned. Most of the established ready mix companies here take a dim view of this kind of thing and at least two that I know of will sack the drivers for doing this. No point in whinging to the police - take your complaint to somebody who can actually do something about it.
