Wetherspoons are now selling 50cl bottled Efes for £1.99, 4.70Tl at today's exchange rate, so if they can do it with import duties & transport charges and still make a profit, why the exorbitant charges at some retail bar/restaurant outlets in Turkey & TRNC?!

Quite simply, being a v large chain as opposed to a one man band operation, their overhads are far lower, enabling them to sell loss leaders to pull punters in.

Besides, I'd much rather sup an Efes on a lovely roof terrace in NC, than surrounded by Chavs itching for a fight eyeing up the car that you've left outside unlocked.

Love drinking Efes in Fast Food with a kebab, but when back in the old UK in Wetherspoons Monday, Tuesday, Wedensday a bottle of Hardy's Chardonnay is just £4.99 a bottle. Wetherspoons undercut most places and when they open a new outlet lots of the smaller pubs have no other option but to close. Also last year in Turkey Efes was more expensive than TRNC for a bottle. As for message 2, depends when you frequent Wetherspoons we are usually in early doors and meet with friends for a few drinks before heading home for dinner. Never any chavs in and if there does happen to be the odd idiot, they are very quickly thrown out, but will agree whether it be Efes or wine it is so much nicer in TRNC.

I have it on good authority (from a friend that works for a brewery) that Wetherspoons buy alcohol that does not have a very long date on it ie not far off sell by therefore they can sell it cheaply as they know they will get the turnaround on sales.

I think Efes tastes the same as well whether UK or Cyprus what is much better however is the surroundings in which you drink it, laying by the pool in the sunshine beats a wetherspoons pub hands down! Counting the days till we come over now.

Good question Hilda (msg 8). Though even if imported, the costs to import to here from Turkey is still high - shipping and then customs taxes, stoppage, handling etc. etc. and then all the regs to go through with the health and trade ministries beforehand getting the approval to import in the first place. It's a minefield. I'll bet it's not so much aggravation sending stuff to the UK than it is sending it to NC.

ive often wonderd why english produce here is so expensive, it leaves its country of destination with no duties as it is for export.

Also english beers, ect ect, it all leaves the UK on its merry little way with no taxes or duties.

Turns up in cyprus at a premium, strange isnt it ,duties here are not to over the top.i do know first hand.

shipping charges are not so expensive, lets say a 40ft chilled or frozen container full of iceland goods, maybe youll get 20,000 pieces of frozen goods in that container, just food for thought

40%. ouchh

still, iceland pizza as a example is £1 in the UK, if buying from iceland for export im sure that same pizza is no more than 60pence.

iceland pizza here is anything from 6tl to 9tl. The mark up here on everything in cyprus seems to be above 60 to 80% and in some cases more than 150%

and no i do not eat just iceland food other than there chocolate cake or strawberry cheesecake, delicious!
