Help a.s.a.p. The car hire company we've booked with in the south where we're staying won't allow us to take it to the North. Any suggestions ie. could we drive to a crossing leave the car south side, are there car parks? and then cross and hire a car in the north for a day(s) as we really want to explore the east peninsular, probably take us more than a day! Which crossing is best if we were to do this are there car hire offices just over the crossings? Thanks for any info.

Suggest Beyermadu (Pyle) crossing, you could park in the south walk over and pick up a hire car in the north.

Or find a car hire company in the south that WILL allow you to cross over - and end your rental with the current company

You'll certainly want more than a day to explore the Karpas peninsular.

How will your car rental company know if you take the car to the north?

But Greek side insurance doesn't cover you anyway in the north, you have to buy TRNC insurance at the Metahan crossing and are responsible for getting the vehicle back in the event of an accident whether the rental company let you take it north or not.

Thanks for reply. Bit late in the day to cancel as off tomorrow, but would like to know if Avis has an office north of Beyermadu crossing or any other reputable firm which offers fully comp.

Would be easier to change car hire company, but if not possible my suggestion is to drive (or you could have taken a bus) to the walled Nicosia where you will find plenty of car parks. Head for Ledra Street (ask for Debenhams) and carry on walking until you come to the crossing to enter the North. You will need to show your passport and get a visa stamp (make sure it's put on the supplied piece of paper and not in your passport) Once through the crossing you can ask for Kyrenia Gate (Tourist Information) and plan your North Cyprus visit.

I hired with Andys Agathocleous Motors Ltd, picked up the car at Larnaca Airport with a complimentary bottle of wine, they know the car was going over to the north, paid 35 euros for TRNC car insurance at Metahan, have already done 2 Larnaca runs for relations staying with me in Alsancak which has saved them £200 and enjoyed the freedom of going to the Troodos or the Karpas. I also don't bother with those little paper slips at the border, I just ask them to stamp my passport, that's what a passport is for and I am not bothered to have a stamp from a country I have a great affection for in it.

Just returned from Cyprus. We crossed over by foot in Lefkosia, but also at a crossing north of Famagusta by private taxi, name of driver given to us by the fellow who cleaned our pool!

Far better than a coach tour cost us half the price and driver took us to places we wanted to visit and showed us best view places and beaches in Salamis and Famagusta, as well as shops and the area fenced off due to the conflict. Thank you Martin, you were a gem.

Recommend this guy. Get in touch if you want his number.

Can I ask how many cigarettes can we bring over to the North from the South? There are plenty of topics to show how many you can take from North into South but I can't find my answer. We do not arrive into Larnaca until 9:30 pm, our hire car is not being delivered until 10:00am the next day so we need enough to last us until we can get to a shop in the North. Thanks

Oldbill,

Don't buy too many cigarettes in the south as they are far cheaper up here in the North.

Thanks Chis, we won't be buying too many but we need enough to last us until we get a chance to get out and about in the North. Are the limits is the same as it is from North to South?
