Hello all

Would anyone know if this is true? I have been told that after 3 months on the Island you must come off and will not be able to re-enter until another 3 months has passed. True or False?

Thank you for your advice.

Checkers.

This is happening in turkey to the brits but as yet has not been made law here. It means that if you have not got residency then you can stay 90 days but cant return for another 90 days which if implemented here would stop people from going to the south to get another 90 day visa or to turkey on a day trip.

Most people pop over to Turkey for a weekend when the 90 day visa runs out and then come back and get another 90 day visa. I don't think you are supposed to keep doing that though; they do prefer you to go for temporary residence.

Just go and do your temporary residency. Admittedly, it is a bit of a bind but you only have to do it once a year and it does take the 'can I, can't I stay' question out of the equation.

DOCUMENTS NEEDED FOR TEMPORARY RESIDENCY as of 28 July 2010.

1. Kochan or Contract of Sale stamped by Land Registry Office to show Stamp Duty paid. Original plus 2 copies.

2. Letter from local Muhtar. Original plus copy. Stamped at 10 YTL.

3. Two copies of local bank account statement.

4. Two copies of Passport.

5. Two passport sized photographs.

6. One 9.75 YTL stamp.

If an unmarried couple apply and one of them is not named on the Kochan or Contract of Sale then that person needs to go to a Notary for a letter to say that they are living at the same address on a rent-free basis.

This is a new one on me but if its happening in Turkey, I will not be surprised if it happens here too.

I agree with the above comments about getting residency but whay do people not bother as its not worth the hassle, after akll you are in a foreign country and should play by the rules.

Have you been recently to the police station a I was not asked for any stamps, photo's. They only took one copy of my passport, one copy of my contract one copy of my bank statements. Was this your first time as that would explain why you had so much paperwork. What was the 9.25tl stamp for anyway?

The stamps I was given from the Girne post office for Muktar letter and residency (passport stamp) was:-

1.35 tl - Muktar letter

7.00 tl - Passport stamp

As far I know the new Turkish mainland visa idea has been shelved for now.

I'm sorry to sound cynical, but do you ever get the feeling that you aren't wanted?

This sounds like another example of the TRNC wanting to squeeze out foreigners.

Many people who own holiday homes flit between the UK and TRNC every 6 weeks or couple of months.....will they not be able to do this any more?

Will there have to be at least 3 months between each visit?

This will certainly do nothing to help the TRNC property market which is already on its knees.....and it is all self-inflicted !

People need to be aware that whatever form a Cyprus "settlement" takes.....the wants and needs of Brits and other foreign buyers will be way way down the list of priorities.

Cronos as was stated by a previous poster this is only happening in Turkey not here. I think the staying away 90 days only applies if you have been here for 90 days in one stretch. When I read about it I believe it said people coming and going for short stays would not be affected.

Turkey is not in the EU but Cyprus is so this would be a move away from creating an environment acceptable for direct trade with the EU. Mind you, if the EU refuses direct trade this year then that would be another matter and the introduction of a Turkish style 90 day rule would be understandable

I think you will find that they have changed there minds in Turkey and now it is back to the old system, read this over the weekend in one of the Turkish dailys but I can't remember which one.

So don't quote me.

Hi Bazilbrush - message 7

Nothing in life is straightforward, is it.

Yes, it is our first time application.

When we went to the police station last week we were told to bring the documents listed in message 5.

When we went today we were given back one copy of the bank statement, Muhtars letter and passport.

Normally you need only one copy of the Sales Contract. But since my partner has nothing in her name then a second copy of my contract needed to accompany the letter she had from the Notary.

The 9.75YTL stamp is essential.

Also, he never told us that we had to have a photocopy of the page in our passport showing our most recent entry stamp.

We have also, today, had our blood tests done at the local Lab and need to take the Lab receipt back to him this week.

Hope this clarifies the matter.

I feel the need to jump in at this point and perhaps tell you guys that this is not being done to stop Britts/ex-pats from staying in TRNC without residency BUT to stop mainland Turks from coming over working illegaly for 90 days, taking a day break to Turkey and coming back for another 90 days visa to work yet again illegaly.

In a way same sort of reason as the "fishing license".That was brought in force to stop 'our' neighbours from coming over and taking all the fish there for whatever purpose.

I want to apply for temp residency but my husband, who doesn't spend as much time here as me (as he is working elsewhere), doesn't want to apply yet. Can a wife apply without the husband? Our contract & bank accounts are in joint names.

Such a good idea. Like Zerochlor? Cleans, Oxidses and protects against infection.
