I would like to hire a car in the North for two days to make a trip to Paphos. Can anyone confirm whether this is possible and if so which RentaCar companies will hire out for this purpose, preferably East of Girne.

I have already asked two companies, but with no joy, which may be due to issues with regard to insurance.

Thanks in anticipation for any positive advice and feedback.

Silverfox,

As far as I am aware, unless it has changed recently, you cannot take a hire car across the border from North to South. You will have to get a taxi which to Paphos from the border and leave your car there, the price is in the region of £80-90 one way.

As I say, this was the ruling unless it has changed.

Good luck.

silverfox, we hired one from Oscar car hire and they insured it for us to travel south, i know a lot do not like doing it as if they break down the would have difficulty getting the car back.

My understanding is that the reason they (the hire companies) don't normally allow it is if you take the car south you can flog it without them (the hire car companies) doing a damn thing about it. If you are a trusted client then they will allow it.

Hi,

I have been across in my hire car a number of times, including a 4 day trip all around the south and up the mountains etc.

It needs the company that is hiring the car this side to give you written permission to take it across, and not all companies will do so. I suggest that you ring around the car hire companies and just ask the question.

Good luck.

Paul

Thanks for the replies so far , conflicting as they are......yes you can, no you cant, maybe, maybe not...so I am still a little confused.

Ref message 4...I would just hire a car in the south which would be a sight cheaper than £160 for 2 days.

The same question applies...CAN YOU? .......and if so which company will hire out a car?

Thanks

Each hire company has it's own policy on whether you can go south with their cars. Your problem is likely to be that you only want a 2 day hire. Most hirers will only do a 3 day minimum.

Not true. We hired a car just over the Ledra Palace crossing for one day last October at a very reasonable rate - and a much better quality car. if you want more details let me know and I'll search them out.

Forgot to mention - the reason we hired the car.

The hirer was happy for us to go to the dark side with it but said if anything happened we'd be on our own.

Astra Self Drive Cars Ltd 2- 4 Iroone Ave, Ayios Andreas, Nicosia +357 22 558.000

One day hire was £47.83 plus VAT. They added a fixed one day (hard printed on the contract form) surcharge but think two days would be normal rates. With four of us it seemed quite a reasonable rate. Nice new car as well. Person we dealt with was very pleasant. They took a large sum for a tankful of petrol (£86.96) with the proviso that if it was full on return they would refund it. A little concerned but they did despite returning the car when the branch was closed and keys through door.

Parked car just before the foot crossing at Ledra Palace - 5 lira.

Silver fox,

The only place to get a definitive answer if that is what you want is the hire companies.

So instead of asking here and in your view receiving conflicting advice ask at the only places who will give correct advice.

Message 19: Yes we tried Avis but not able to help and directed us round the corner to Astra

Message 18: They are doing some research which is quite reasonable and some of us are providing factual information. I'm sure most people know they can go to the horses mouth. But better to know if what they want is posssible, where the horse is stabled, and idea of how much it costs, and if there are any problems before they venture further - don't you think.
