Google Earth shows all historic earthquakes around the world if you check the correct box.

I wouldn't worry yourself over anything under 5. Over 6 though is a different matter. Over 7 and it will change your life for ever. And that's if the epicentre is Cyprus area. You will have 11 seconds to get out of a building and if you live in an apartment building, don't use the stairs as this is a weak point. Getting under a solid table is better than holding onto a door frame. The best thing is to just try and get out as fast as possible, trust me! PS If you live on the top floor of an apartment building, you should go UP, not DOWN!! Easier said than done!! PPS If you have those iron bars on your ground floor windows, I hope they are the ones that open!!

It was a serious question - no catches.

What part of Cyprus was affected? Was any serious damage done? Was anyone killed?

"1953: Earthquake in Cyprus

LIMASSOL, Cyprus: Violent earthquakes shook parts of this island into a scene of death and destruction today [Sept. 10], and the British Mediterranean Fleet broke off manoeuvers to rush aid. An official communiqué reported that about 40 people were dead and about 100 seriously injured. Thousands were homeless. Villages were reported shaken down by the quakes in the Paphos district. Altogether, some 135 villages in the district were hit by the tremors, the worst in the modern history of the island. Waves caused by earthquakes tend to be very high near the beaches. The writer was on board a ship outside Paphos on 10th September 1953, when an earthquake and subsequent tremors caused damage to the buildings on land and the huge ship was lifted up by the waves at sea."

My recollection is that there was a minor quake in June 1997.

I know when I first arrived in July 1997, the swimming pool in the UNPA was still being repaired due to the cracks that had developed.

Sgt John de Lacy (Irish Army) was thrown off of his lifeguard chair into the the pool by the force of the quake. As he went on to serve in Kosovo, and Bosnia as RSM I do not think his injuries were too life threatening.

RE msg 1, No1Doyen: (...) Has there ever been an Earthquake in Cyprus? (...)

=> Bill, there have been earthquakes in Cyprus all the time. Some periods were extremely dangerous: "In addition to the devastation of medieval warfare and the Turkish conquest (1570/1), earthquakes seem to have affected at all times the western division of Cyprus much more than its eastern shores. The earthquakes of later times, as far as they are recorded, seem to have been very prevalent during the Venetian occupation of the XVIth century, and at this time the shocks which so much injured the cathedral of Nicosia, probably laid the western towns in complete ruin. In 1735, an earthquake is said to have killed 200 Turks in St. Sophia, Famagusta, (Drummond)."

Curium was destroyed by earthquake centuries ago as were other sites in the area (south), and Paphos has been renowned as being one of the worst affected zones.

When I was in Limassol in 1990 teaching the desks shook and all the kids were sent home. I was standing and didn't feel a thing, but the Lebanese with whom I was working panicked. Rumbles happen periodically, but nothing really serious this side - unless you count Soli - again centuries ago.

So, yes, - we are on one of the plates. Will we live to old age? Probably!

There is qhite serious damage caused by an earthquake in the Blue House (Mavi Kosk), near Camlibel. It was sometime ago, obviously. The Salamis ruins were caused by an earthquake, allegedly.

We have quakes all the time - most not noticable by ourselves. but living on the second most active plate boundary on the planet we are likely to get a few jolts now and then. The standard algorithm for frequency and magnitude indicates that the islnd is due for a 7+ quake imminently - but we're already 5 years overdue!..... any areas affected will mainly be on the south coast - Limmasol, Paphos etc, adjacent to the plate boundary. Here in the north it's a good few thousand years since we've had anything destructive. Sleep well.

I was in a 6.3 earthquake in Dominican Republic a few years back and it was the most terrifying moment of my life. But anything below 6 isn't supposed to be so bad........not sure I'd be happy about experiencing that though!?

Malsancak, msge. 9

I actually experienced that devastating 'quake in 1953. My family was living in Nicosia at the time, my Mum was in hospital recovering from major surgery and Dad & myself were in our apartment. If memory serves we felt the first quake (there were at least 3 after-shocks) about 5.45 a.m. that morning. I thought my Dad was shaking me to get up as I'd overslept! When the second jolt came (fiercer than the first) I knew it was an earthquake and we had to get out of the building - fast! Met my Dad in the corridor and we belted downstairs and out. Couldn't believe it but, when standing in the road outside the building, we felt nothing but the building was swaying (terrifying sight) and the doorknocker was going like the clappers (excuse pun). In our 20 years in Cyprus that was the worst quake ever and Paphos area declared disaster zone as so many died and many homes destroyed. Roads down there also just 'opened up'. A real experience.

Been through two big ones in LA, 6.9 the biggest, 4,30 a,m. bed was literately a bucking bronco, swimming pool lost half the water, tv flew off the shelf as did the vcr and bottles. I just laid in bed and waited it out, tranformers outside blew up one by one causing big blue flashes.

It was my second big shaker, so not that scared..there is one every day, some we dont even feel. just had a 1,9 in the last hour..

here is an interesting site, http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/

Frontalman,

The Blue Pavilion was probably more affected by crap building techniques than any Earthquake... If you look through the gap in the wall there is nothing tying in the wall at the corner....
