We have a 5 piece band and are looking to add a 2nd rhythm/lead or bass guitarist. The band is based on the west side of Girne but play both sides. We play a mixture of 60's to 90's music rarely covered by other bands here but are all well known tunes.

We rehearse twice a week and are adding new songs all the time.

If you are interested and have your own guitar and transport please contact Glen via email at dustyptrnc@live.co.uk and I will arrange to meet.

If a 5 piece band - what instruments do the current 5 play - do you have a singer?

If playing publicly, how do you get over the work permit problem, and how would any new member of you band who doesn't have a work permit?

I look forward to your reply............

I don't have any obsession re work permits - but from what one reads on CY44, the local police certainly have!

Their excuse, of course, is that local (TRNC) bands are being deprived of [paid] work if foreigners, without work permits, entertain the public in bars, pubs, or restaurants. To a point, they are right - BUT there isn't enough local talent capable of playing western music to cover the amount of bars who would like to encourage increased patronage by offering 'live' music.

Perhaps it's only me - but I find [most] Turkish music totally uninspiring, strident and tuneless - and to have to sit in a bar listening to it all night - no thanks!

I admit I am only a mediocre rhythm guitarist [unlike you 'full-on' lead guys!], but I might like to join a band who would accept my limited talent - that's the reason I ask about the 'work permit situation'.

Cont'd:

I wouldn't like to be in a situation where I was strumming away naively, later to be arrested as a result of a police raid on the premises, have my expensive amp and guitar confiscated and be forced to pay some ridiculously excessive fine to get it back. Then, of course, I could be charged and have to go to court, at further huge expense, to defend myself.

Do you live here full time, as I do?

If so, and if you play publicly in TRNC, you should know the score - now do you get the picture?

Tenakoutou, absolutely right. If no one has the answer one might say you be on a "wing" and a prayer carrying 1250 tl in your back pocket. Layby Lil is clearly oblivious to the reality and by the attitude might perhaps enjoy his visit to the slammer "guns a blazing".

But then personality attacks seem to be his only form of defence. Maybe he is frightened as are the other tightrope walkers, that his limelight will get stolen if other musicians enter the circuit..

I've been told there is a crackdown coming. People have been deported for "businesses" and lost everything. There are rules, although they only seem to apply to foreigners.

Skin up - chill out, and fıgure out what people's obsession about work permits is all about!

Heartman - re your msg 1:

I, and perhaps others would like your reply re your band members' 'work permit situatıon'..........I don't think we're being 'stirrers' by asking this question.

For myself, I just want to stay legal - certainly not end up, as Yorgozlu (perhaps not so jokingly!) quips, 'until you are on that boat and given 7 days to leave the island regardless what you may have here. wink wink wink.... '

Thanks for your support, 'wings'!

Thank you for your reply to my email to you.

I was hoping for some definitive answers - but..........

OK, it was a 'your guess is as good as mine' response, which you could have simply posted on this thread.

But to 'get back on thread' - 'Good Guitarist Wanted':

TRNC has its rules - rules are rules - even though nobody seems to know how to interpret them!

So, if any musician, hairdresser, cross-dresser, donkey trainer or pheasant plucker thinks 'that's OK - rules are made to be broken!' - then good luck to them all!

How do artists fair in all this? If I paint a picture and I sell it... have I done a local out of a sale? It's the same surely?

I suppose if you play really loud heavy rock and your playing encourages more of a crowd you are likely to draw more attention from the rozzers.

Anybody being paid for a service, even if it's only getting the petrol money back, is technically "working" according to TRNC rules. But it depends on the authority's interpretation - which appears to change hour by hour, let alone day by day.

In the last three years I think there have been a number of swoops - usually when there's little money left in the pot.

And they always go for the easy targets. I'm not saying that is right.

But am I right in getting the feeling that there is tacit approval of breaking the rules when it suits? Why should one person come here and register, and get their residency and work permits while another doesn't? For all those who go to the time, trouble and expense to make sure they are legal here, there appear to be others who think they are immune.

There's no doubt that you're playing 'Russian Roulette' with your temporary residency status by illegally working - paid, or unpaid, in their eyes is still putting a local out of a job.

Even charities have to be registered - but I don't know the rules [re permits] pertaining to those working to raise money for charities by performing publicly, or doing a job of work for someone else - e.g., cleaning an old expat couple's windows for a fee to be donated to charity, could be construed by the authorities as 'depriving a local of a fee earning job'.

Then, again, TRNC always has been, and still is, a minefield of misinformation!

We would all benefit if only the BRS, or 'Cyprus Today', would provide a list of 'do's & dont's' - even 'don'ts' would do!

I agree, Tenakoutou, but also feel that the ways things are, as soon as the BRS or HBPG or Cyprus Today publish any information there will be changes or different interpretations on the law

LL I have no intention of sending any email to you. I have the answers and they are very clear........ Dont walk the "thin blue line". What you and the rest like Snakes do is your choice and possibly your ticket home.
