you would have to do formula's in bracets like =SUM(column number-column number) and press enter - it is best to do it manually rather than autosum. for example, I would like to add up everything I have in 1 column, so I wouldgo to the end of the column and type =SUM(A1+A20) and press enter.

I hope that makes sense....

If you have your income in column A cell 1 and outgoings starting in cell 1 of column B then in cell 2 of column A you would put the formula =sum(click cell in A [type in minus sign] then click cell in B) and press return. Then in cell 2 of column B your next outgoing and so on. To copy down the formula in column A hovver your mouse over the bottom right corner of the cell until a + sign appears, double click and drag it down for as many cells as you want. Whenever you add a new outgoing in column B the sub-total in column A will change.

Hope you understand this (and more importantly, I hope it works).

Also use * for multiply & / for divide.

e.g enter =A1*C1 in, say E1, to multiply the number in column A by the number in column C & copy this formula right down column E.

Using Excel things soon start to fall in place.

Do all the formatting at the end, when you have the basics of the spreadsheet sorted.

If you can't get you're head around the formula you want, write it down longhand first. Put brackets around each section of the formula to keep each 'bit' separate. Then bit by bit, exchange you're longhand formulas in each set of brackets, for their corresponding Excel formulas - don't forget to keep the brackets in place.

eg, where income this month is in A1 and your expenditure is in a list A3 to A20, your balance at the start of the month is in A22, and you want the running total to be displayed in cell A23

In other words, ((add up expenditure or SUM (A3 to A20)) (take it away from income A1)) (add that all to the balance at start of month A22)

type in A23:

=A22+(A1-(sum(A3:A20)))

Thank you very much for all this information.

I am going to have a go at this in the morning - I have read everything through quite a few times and think I've got it

so will let you know how I get on and thanks Dennis I may well be calling you!
