What a shame.................had looked forward to a meal at Erol`s for a long time. Phoned tonight, a Friday , and they had a table. great. Went there at 8.45 and they had quite a few spare tables. Given menu`s.............................then eventually asked if we had been asked for drinks .............no............. Then ordered food.............. Don`t get me wrong food was very good indeed..............both had the steak.....but as it was the first time we had been ...there was no interest in us and service was appalling. No............were we on holiday .where do you live.....................etc etc as you would expect to a new customer..................... And they were not busy..........and other who they obviously knew had free brandies..............not even asked................. So yes food great - SERVICE NOT GOOD.And b4 any one says we will vote with our feet.....and won`t be back in a hurry..............too many others to try............

Hi Loose Boots I must declare my interest before commenting on your posting. Erol's is my Wife and my favourite restaurant, it's our first meal out when we fly in and our last meal before we fly out, I can also add that many of our friends also view Erol's in a similar light. Being a regular we are known and ordering almost the same meal and drinks on each visit service is always welcoming and efficient. I do accept however that if there is a weakness often the initial welcome especially to "new faces" is not as good as it could or should be. The drinks issue is baffling as we always go to the bar first and take our drinks to the table we have been allocated. I hope you give them another chance so you can experience the quality of dining we always enjoy there. I also hope Erol and Caroline read and react positively your posting and improve this aspect of the restaurant's performance. Doug

| Have been going to Erols for a few years now and the food has always been spot on, but they never seem pleased or even too bothered that you have turned up. This may be ok for some diners, but there are so many empty restrarants around nowadays that we can pick and choose. Its no longer in our top 3, and instead of going 4 or 5 times a year we have only been once in 2010. If they dont ramp up their customer care I can see them dissapearing in a couple of years. | I tend to agree with the above comments. When we first bought our place in Ozankoy 4 years ago we visited Erols after reading all the rave reviews. I must admit that I was generally underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong...there was nothing wrong with the food but then again it was nothing special. I've had much better meals at some of the more cheap and cheerful establishments in Ozankoy. And other posters are spot on...the service and hospitality were generally lacking. The fact that we never went again in 4 years speaks for itself. |

Now I do like Erol's food (esp fillet steak) but would agree that we have never been particularly welcomed by Mrs Erol (if at all) and it has grated. I also do not like the way she barks orders at the staff. Now that there are other restaurants doing good steak I wouldn't bother driving there from Karsiyaka.

Erols is our favourite restaurant and we have been countless times in the 7 years we have lived here. We have never had a bad (or even indifferent) meal everything is always tip top quality & the portions are more than generous. As for Mrs Erol shouting orders at the staff they would not hear with all the hubbub if she whispered at them - haven't you seen any of the TV chef programmes?? As the old saying goes 'there's no such thing as bad publicity' so hopefully this thread will encourage more people to go to Erols & enjoy their delicious food. If you want to experience bad service you should try Tango to Buddha we went last night sat at table at 9.00 had a job to get a drink, then to order, then to get more drinks/water main course eventually served at 11.00! Not asked if we wanted deserts/coffees but by then of course they were moving into their night club mode.

I can name a few instances both in the UK and the TRNC where bad publicity has severely damaged the bottom line, and I feel continuing this thread will not do Erols any favours. We will continue to use the restraunt occasionally as the food is always good. Michael

Went last nearly three years ago - twice in three days - first trip was perfect, Mrs Erol was happy, friendly and talkative and the food was excellent. This probably because we were there with long time friends of Mrs Erol! The second time we were ignored totaly, had to fight to place an order, the food was patchy and the service was terrible - same low numbers of people in there as before with Mrs Erol doing her utmost to keep only one table happy - the rest, she could have cared less but she would have had to try to do that. Bottom line for me, you want my money? - then work for it, I had to!

These threads are always so subjective!! One mans meat Etc. The other issue here is that not many of the restaurants are always consistant, you can go one week, great service nice meal, then try recommending it to someone, they go and its terrible!!! It all depends on your tollerence level for waiting for your meal, how the steak is cooked, how much you paid, the price of drinks, Etc. We went to Guidos for a Sunday lunch because everyone was raving about it, the actual main meal was very tasty and plentyful, I ordered the sardines for a starter and was very disappointed, one sardine the size of my thumb split into three, one fork full it was gone!!! Never been back, shame really.

Some people! why on earth do some people need to be 'fawned upon' by management and waiters when they go for a meal. It should be a social occasion where you you talk to and make merry with your table companions. Sit back, relax and enjoy the company and let the busy staff get on with their jobs. Tony

Happy Hussar....msg 22 I don't think anyone is asking to be fawned upon.....they are just asking for a bit of civility , attentive service and hospitality. Not too much to ask for is it? Particularly in places like Erols who charge a premium for a supposedly up market dining experience.

There is no need to "try" to bring down any business - they tend to do it all by themselves. If I find places where I can post a positive comment then I will, by the same note if it is a negative comment then it should also be posted! People should be able to make up their own minds anyway. For me Erols is not the place to dine, that is my personal opinion like it or not. I am sure that Erols still do a roaring trade and will continue to do so, good luck to them. I do not asked to be fawned upon either, normal civil behaviour will do, courtesy costs nothing! More than happy to let the busy staff get on with their jobs but when the busy staff's job is to sit with customers and chat to the detriment of serving other customers who are waiting - too much.

I'm afraid i have to agree with Soupseed, i do have to wonder why folk feel the need to post their complaints regarding a restaurant or any other service for that matter without first raising their concerns with the owners, managers first. Dont get me wrong i am not condoning the service you received but if it had been me i would have voiced my complaint to them so at least they have the opportunity to make amends. Just my opinion.

stockiefan message 21, I'm very sorry for your disappointment, the sardines are totally filleted to avoid you getting bones, this shrinks them. Its served as a starter. We have served these for the 6 years and this is the first complaint. Why couldn't you tell me at the time, i would have ensured you got more. when we do the 20 tl menu i get phone calls all the time requesting the sardines. I'm sorry we did not live up to your expectations, 20 tl for 2 courses. i only wish you had made me aware i ask often enough if all is fine x

I was in North London today at Wood Green with a friend. Although she knew the area.it was lunchtime and I recommended a Chinese restaurant which served good food at reasonable prices, she had never been there. She ordered a sweet and sour dish and I , BBQ pork and noodle dish, both were delicious. The meat in both dishes were so tender and the vegetables with the noodles were lovely. For both of us it came to £11.20 including chinese tea. I highly recommed it to anyone visisting this part of London.

lots of negative stuff here. are we talkin the same place !!! great roof top location .. a drink at the bar with Errol who is a great character. does the best pre dinner brandy sour on the island. then followed by free starter salads ,dips and crudities.....then the best fillet steak on the planet .. loads of complimentries ..where are you whingers from.. in life what you project is what you get back.. Honestly i recomend this place to all visitors as i dont want them to miss this place as part of their holiday experience of north cyprus.. never failed yet .. apart from the odd " my sirloins tuff" then dont ask for very well done, iriot!!

Cypriots can be victims of their own hospitality. They often lavish much more attention on regulars than they do on "visitors". They value their regulars to the detriment of others who then don't become regulars themselves. No-one likes to see someone else getting "better" treatment than themselves. Perhaps if bars and restaurants paid MORE attention to visitors than they do to regulars, they might get more returning guests.

Hello everyone good morning The original posting from Loose Boots has really caught fire and although I felt his posting was balanced and fair it unfortunately brings out the worse in many of the contributors to C44. As can be seen from my posting message 3, I accept there is room for improvement but that is true of every restaurant in NC. But let's get these harsh and in many cases unfair postings in proportion and not get carried away with a lynch mob mentality. Erol and Caroline run one of the best restaurants in NC and anyone who has been put off going there by some of the more harsh and unfair postings will be missing out on a very nice evening featuring wonderful food mainly cooked over a charcoal grill by a Chef who is a genius at grill. regards Doug

Lilli, On the day we called you were ill and not there i,m sory to say. The trouble with brits and I am no different we hate complaining! I put it down to experience, as I did say though the main meal was without doubt very nice and plentyful. Very odd though that no one else has mentioned the very small portion of sardines, maybe my expectation were too high.

Doug....msg 46 "lynch mob mentality" ???? With all due respect I think you may be getting carried away! This is a public forum and people are expressing their actual experience at this particular restaurant. If you had a good experience then that is great...but don't castigate people for having a different opinion.

Looseboots said "Don`t get me wrong food was very good indeed" and "So yes food great." So, what he missed out on was the fawning and half a liras worth of free brandy. I better go there as I like good food, never accept the free brandy and simply detest fawning. Why should we be in the least concerned whether the restaurant owner knows if we live here or are on holiday. Either he produces a good meal or he doesn't.

JohnW. I worked in hotels and pubs temporarily as a young man and I can tell you, your low expectations of service would not be accepted by most of our patrons. Being pleasant and chatting with the customers was a BASIC requirement of the job. Most of us did not think asking where people came from or how they liked UK or the football was an effort or fawning, matter of fact I quite liked interacting in what at times was a quite boring and hard job. I have never been in Erols,so cant comment ,but if I ,on the other side of the counter ,any where, do no feel welcome, I will go to some other place that does welcome my custom.

Re: Msg 1, Loose Boots, I genuinely do not understand your complaint. It is mauvais ton for an owner or a waiter to start asking their customers personal questions, especially on their first visit. It is also highly unprofessional. I agree with Happy Hussar who wrote that visiting restaurant is a “social occasion where you talk to and make merry with your table companions. Sit back, relax and enjoy the company and let the busy staff get on with their jobs.” Clarissa

All of us have differing opinions on restaurants - one mans meat is another mans poison scenario. I take on board the comments made by the original poster, and he has the right to make his point, however everyone of us should make our own opinion of the restaurant. I will definitely give Erols a visit and find out for myself just how good it is.

For what its worth, we have lived on the island for 6 years and have tried almost every restaurant going. If we go to a place and come away saying it was "okay" it gets a miss, we don't do OK any more. There are plenty of choices and we all have our special places but they are few and far between. Every eatery has to go that extra mile if they want to keep customers, resonably priced food AND DRINKS especially, decent portions. and a smile. We are not big eaters, but as Northern folk we do like fair sized portions, thats where most places let themselves down!

Erol and Caroline (Edward and Serife their siblings) are good people they have been so helpful to me even spending their little spare time running me around sorting things out. They are great hosts and do this without being nosey and invading your privacy. Please dont forget that a conversation is a two way thing and if you dont speak up some people may assume that you are happy.I advise you to go again because at the end of the day the food is what you went for and that cannot be beaten.

Erol and Caroline are friends of our. They are two of the nicest people we have met since living here. I will ask them to read these posts and address any issues. They are both very approachable so if your unhappy about something whilst your dining there please mention it to one of them at the time, so they can rectify the issue.

Directions from the mosque .. With the mosque behind you turn right .. Zig zag round the Ozankoy bookshop .. Pass Five Fingers Restaurant on your right. Bear right and follow road round up the steep hill .. Straight on at the top, Erolls car park is just past the house on your right !

I took some friends to Errols in February and has a fantastic night. Having a very large appetite, I chose the T-Bone and much to my friend's delight I could not finish it. We all enjoyed the food, the place and the hospitality - so much so that we went back again a few nights later for an equally enjoyable night. I will be over with the family in a couple of weeks and will definately be enjoying a night at Errols again - if we can get a table!

Great restaurant, excellent food - all high quality. Mezes home made and various specials on offer. The restaurant is always full whilst others remain empty. Speaks for itself. Thanks, Erol and Caroline, for providing a restaurant where the quality of the meal is always guaranteed and there is always a great atmosphere.

Do Erol's do any turkish food, we dine out with turkish friends from Ozankoy and we took them to Old Mill last year but all the menu was english and as they don't eat much meat they struggled the only chicken meal was with bacon, asked if there was anything else and was told no only what was on the menu. They had a plain chicken breast without the bacon.

Hi what a wonderful evening at Erols last night we have never seen the car park so full cars were double parked & not a spare chair to be had! The food was as good as ever, service was spot on - anybody who fails to be impressed need not bother about going back because there's plenty of people who LOVE IT!!
