Give it a try, but my personal experience is that you will not find a decent tasting doner kebab in North Cyprus.

UK doner kebabs are so much better...

And I'm Cypriot

Msg 5 what a load of bo**ocks

It is quite far to travel from acapulco but the best lamb or chicken or mixed doner on the island bar none is served at "Fast food" cafe in Alsancak village

an experience not to be missed when you are in the "west side" of Girne

I am quoting from personal experience.. If you have anything constructive to say regards the subject in question then do so. Your old enough to be able to post without being SO yobbish so give it try....

(And yes if I had to have a doner in NC I'd choose fastfood because its hygenic, fresh and well served)

BUT NOT AS TASTY AS UK DONER !! (MY PERSONAL OPINION)

Stonehousepub, where in the UK have you had a doner kebab that was tasty and made from meat that is recognisable. I have only had doner made from some pink stuff.

I too like the kebabs served at Fast Food Cafe and the friendliness and modest prices. Is the comparison being made "like with like" as I have never known anyone in UK go for a Donar Kebab until the pubs have closed and the eating is undertaken whilst completely blotto ?

Totally agree with the recommendations for Fast Food in the centre of Alsancak, I personally wont eat donner in UK as I find it too greasy, where as Fast Foods is just right, one word of warning dont order the Donner meal unless you are very hungry, I find it too big, a Donner Wrap does me just fine.

And is Ozzie in Gonyeli from the UK by any chance? Doner has to have plenty of fat in it & it must be made from the shoulder part of lamb including pepper, cumin & salt. Also carrots & aubergines are used when making a doner.

Over here they use leg of lamb mixed with beef which makes the doner very dry & tasteless. Must try Ozzies asap !!

Buy the way forgot to mention Ilhan at THE LODGE does a great doner on Sundays give it a try... He ran his own kebab shop for 20 years in London so all his food has the UK touch!!

I find the meat to be palatable but in Cyprus they are mean with the salad ....then again my local kebab shop does man size doners, feed me & mrs no worries.... sorry i dont have the name (if it had one) ...last year i had a nose around The Savoy amd there was huge disruption with the roads and we fell upon a small kebab shop ( very turkish - zero english spoken) and that was the best one to date on the island.... but certainly not a culinary highpoint of the TRNC

Fast food in Alsancak is the only place to go, as regards Egypt-you have to be joking.

Egypt's national dish is squashed pigeon

When I went to China, the Chinese food was nothing like the Chinese food in England. Why would you expect Kebabs in NC to be the same as the UK?

Hippo, in Egypt slices of brain in breadcrumbs and fried is a delicacy also. I have been to Egypt many, many times. Depends where you go for your shoarma (their version of donner)

Stonehouse, don't suppose you have a full recipe for UK style donner? If you have email me it please. I love the doner here but I also love the donner in UK

Fastfood - best we have tasted (and I don't like doner). Home made pickles and a really good spicy sauce.

Good grief - It's generally accepted that the modern Doner Kebab was introduced in Berlin in 1971!!!!!! It's hardly an indigenous dish either to here OR Turkey!!

Jetski, I watched a cookery program where they went to the actual restaurant in Turkey where it was invented. Can't remember the date but it was a lot earlier than you say. The upright modern doner is a lot more recent, but the principle has been there for quite a while.

I make my own doner kebabs on my bbq. Very tasty.
