Child Benefit was introduced after WW2 to boost the UK population after the war losses. As we are way overpopulated in 2010 shouldn't it be stopped altogether? Why are we still being encouraged to breed?

If child benefit really makes that much difference then you cant afford kids ... buy a goldfish ......Never have realised why its the states responsibility to reward childbirth ( thanks message 4) ...so many benefits introduced over the last 10 years, Labour's ploy to secure votes from the growing sponging population. I am all for abolishing thechild benefit and means test the winter fuel payment .....my mum used to get it and gave it to the local hospice, she was embarrassed to receive it as she didn't need it

cond: she was not wealthy by any means, a widow and my dad was a carpenter from 15 to the day he dropped, she just lived within her means..... a lesson/message that seems to have gone astray in recent years.

dave, luckily from afar...........but to answer this would take a long time, it just annoys me when pensioners suffer while "chavs" can pop out kids get a house and benefits , and hospitals employ translaters for people on the nhs who cannot speak english ...to name a few points.........

| Some families with young children work hard and need child care more so in the summer holidays..Both parents pay high tax and the child benifit helps when it comes to clothes child care and the such.I always thought that the husbands tax was higher to cover this..thats how it used to work..Long time since i recived it but I worked full time and I needed my child benifit because a court told my Ex to pay up and he never did,for 18 yrs I tracked him down and took him to court and the courts would bin the arrears and ruduce the amount..whats that all about then ? Thank god my daughter took on my principles and work hard to..I hope they keep the child benifit to enable them to continue to work.there will be a lot more hard up families in the middle class thats for sure. | Spider, Well meaning statement as we would expect from you. But abuse of the system must be cut out. Only breed them if you can pay for them!! wyn Just my views, thats all. |

I sponsored two children and neither of them saw much of me because the system didn't allow - I worked hard and paid my taxes - like many others. The same system that allows too many to sit at home and do nothing. ................except breed
