Don't know whether it's from the water back in the UK or here in TRNC but I haven't used the kettle for a while; I fancied a cup of tea tonight but the sight inside the kettle put me off. There's a thin coating of fur and limescale all around the bottom. Scrubbing doesn't seem to make much difference and I'm loathed to try fairy liquid for fear what the tea'll taste like in the future!

What should I do? Is there something I can use or buy from the supermarket that'll bring it back to looking like a new kettle again?

Thanks.

Just use the bottled water in the 19 litre bottles. We never, ever have to descale our kettle as a result.

Boil clear water a couple of times untill it is clean but if you see that nothing is changing try what others have suggested.

We only ever drink bottled water normally. I do brush my teeth in tap water - didn't think that would be a problem.

However, I always thought the water would be ok if boiled. And I always use tap water when used in cooking. Is that not ok?

Thanks for the tips for tackling the limescale, I'll give them a try.

Andrew. Another very good point.

Why risk the tap water here. The water itself maybe okay but what about the pipes it comes through?

There is still much old lead pipework here in N. Cyprus.

Tuz ruhu is a very strong hydrochloric acid (diluted hydrogen chloride) and not recommended.

It does get rid of the lime scale BUT it can also damage whatever it gets into contact with.

vinegar cover the element with a little water and lots of vinegar and let it boil but be ready to turn off quick as it will bubble up, leave to cool then boil with clear water a couple of times works perfect.

My neighbour has lived here in Cyprus for 26years, and has always drank the water from the tap....and is strong as an ox....i have no worries of drinking the tap water...even my tc neighbours say it's perfectly fine.

I rarely get a build up in my kettle in Karsiyaka...but when i lived in Alsancak, i was constantly having to descale it...i used Cop...put the powder in, boiled the kettle...and voila, a brand new kettle...(thoroughly rinsing it afterwards)

In 3 years of living in Karsiyaka, i have only descaled once!

Be very careful if using any product with hydrochloric acid on any appliance with an electric element, like a kettle, because the element is made of copper and only lightly nickel coated, which gives it that 'silver' appearance. This acid is liable to eat into the copper and cause perforation in the wall of the element, causing a slight ingress of water, but enough to 'blow' the heating wire inside the element. If this happens, one then must replace the element.

You can buy a new, cheapy, plastic jug [kettle] cheaper than to replace the element on, say, a Russell Hobbs, or Morphy Richards kettle, or jug.

If the limesarecale is fairly solid ( and younot too worried about the kettle ), what I do is take the lid off the kettle and switch it on with no water in it. Have some cold water ready and as soon as the element gets really hot ( or the kettle automatically turns off) poor the cold water onto the elemet and the limescale will fracture and rinse out.

You can also tap it, but not too hard, with a wooden spoon to flake off the scale

Stick with Vodka, this will not effect your kettle
