The National Unity Party which currently governs with a minority government has granted authority to Prime Minister Irsen Kucuk to launch work towards establishing a new government. The decision came at the end of discussions within the relevant party organs of the UBP regarding the issue.

The Party assembly also decided to hold its general congress on Saturday the 11th of December 2010.

Issuing a statement at the end of the meeting, UBP leader and Prime Minister Irsen Kucuk announced that the UBP Congress would be held on the 11th of December at the Ataturk Sports Stadium in Lefkosa, adding that district congresses will be held in line with party regulations before that date.

Referring to the efforts of forming a new government, Mr. Kucuk said that he along with the Party Secretary General will be drawing up a program before launching work as soon as possible.



He said that as part of efforts to form a new government, the UBP will be meeting with all political parties as well as independent deputies within the Republic’s Assembly.



In response to a question, the UBP leader said that he will be running for party leader at the UBP’s next congress.
