| President Derviş Eroğlu has said that he does not expect the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to intervene in the ongoing negotiations process. He said that it was highly unlikely for the UN Chief to be visiting Cyprus in the near future. Speaking during a visit paid to him yesterday, the President responded to claims in the Greek Cypriot press that the UN Secretary General was planning to visit the island later this year and that the UN was preparing to take on a more active role in the talks, starting as of September. |

| Stating that he did expect the Cyprus negotiations process to intensify in September, Eroğlu however added “we are prepared to speed things up. However I don’t know if our Greek Cypriot counterparts will consent to this”. “The more frequent and intensified meetings we hold, the higher the chance of achieving our goal of settling the Cyprus Problem by the end of this year” he said. Reminding that the goal to achieve a settlement by the end of this year was included in the UN Secretary General’s report, President Eroğlu said that whether or not this will be possible will become evident as the talks progress. |
