OPENING SPEECH OF PRESIDENT DERVIS EROGLU ON BRT TELEVISION ON THE OCCASION OF 20TH JULY CELEBRATIONS.

Distinguished people of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, my dear brothers, I congratulate your 20th July Peace and Freedom Day with my most sincere feelings.

The sun of freedom which rose 36 years ago on the morning of 20th July is still illuminating us and we believe that it shall continue to do so forever.

I do not exaggerate; Turkish Cypriot People who forced to vanish with the ENOSIS dream of Greek-Greek Cypriot duo, however in spite of all difficulties resisted with the support of motherland Turkey, was reborn with the 20th July 1974 Cyprus Turkish Peace Operation.

If the Turkish Cypriot people did not have national consciousness and desire for freedom and sovereignty, the island would be long under the control of Greece and the Turkish Cypriot people would be under the domination of Greek-Greek Cypriot duo.

If there was not 20th July 1974 Happy Peace Operation supported by Cyprus Turkish Security Forces and realized by motherland Turkey in accordance with her rights and obligations vested by international treaties and historical ties with the Turkish Cypriot people, today it would have not been possible to talk about a Turkish State and sovereign and free Turkish Cypriot People in Cyprus.

If there was not the 20th July Peace Operation then the fascist Greek-Greek Cypriot duo would have reached its aims and the Hellenic Republic of Cyprus declared on the morning of 15th July 1974 would have been annexed to Greece.

Turkish Cypriot people would have been forced to bow to ‘Enosis’ which they refused in 1950, 1955 and 1963 Bloody Christmas.

Massacres in Murataga, Sandallar, Atlılar, Taskent, Aleminyo and other villages would have been the fate of Turkish Cypriot people in many other places.

Turkish Cypriot people are aware of the vital importance of the 20th July Happy Peace Operation and its product Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in freedom and security.

Turkish Cypriot People’s giving up their self determination rights is out of question.

It should have been realized that Turkish Cypriot People would never let to go back pre 1974 period.

We have succeeded a lot after 20th July Happy Peace Operation.

We should struggle for a more rapid development and a more prosperous life however we should not forget that what we have succeeded under embargoes and isolations can not be underestimated.

My dear brothers, a new communal order have arisen in both sides of the island with the 1975 exchange of population agreement.

New generations may not know but many Turkish Cypriots came to the North after they left all their properties in the South trusting motherland Turkey and believing that the newly formed geography was a new hope for them.

After 1974 our people got rid of the ghettos in which they were squeezed by the Greek-Greek Cypriot duo and they enjoyed freedom.

It has not been easy to rehabilitate these people and give them jobs.

We created a state and an economy from scratch with the great financial and moral support of motherland Turkey.

We have established our democratic parliamentary system which we are proud of and which the whole world envy.

We have continued to search for an agreement with our Greek neighbors and have established the Autonomous Turkish Cypriot Administration, Cyprus Turkish Federated State and in the end, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, on 15 November 1983.

We have shown to the world our determination to rule ourselves with our commitment to the geography which formed after 20th July 1974 Happy Peace Operation.

In spite of the embargoes we have established 6 universities working together with the governments of motherland Turkey.

According to the figures declared by our State Planning Organization, our national per capita income is between 13-14 thousand in spite of all the negative factors faced in the world and also in our country.

The number of cars for every 1000 persons was 87 in 1977 while it has become 900 in 2008. Today this number has exceeded 1000.

While the amount of deposits in our banks was 94 million Dollars in 1977 it has today exceeded 4.5 billion Dollars, as shown with our Central Bank figures.

The amount of deposits per capita was 648 Dollars in 1977 however today this number is over 15 thousand Dollars.

Our bed capacity which was 3265 in 1977 has approached 20 thousand today.

Nowadays, we have around 45 thousand students in our universities.

The teacher / student ratio in our Primary and Secondary education is fairly good.

It should be also indicated that we are in a very good situation concerning per capita figures such as doctors and nurses; hospital bed capacity; milk consumption, fuel and electricity consumption and computerization.

People of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are hard working; they have developed their entrepreneurial instinct and made significant progress in spite of embargoes and isolations.

However is this enough?

No!

We shall continue forward.

We are sometimes facing problems like all other countries.

No one should be de-motivated due to these problems.

Necessary precautions are being taken and future shall be much better.

We shall overcome our difficulties.

I strongly believe in this because I know you.

I know motherland Turkey.

Ex-governments and today’s governments of motherland Turkey are attaching great importance to the prosperity and security of the Turkish Cypriot People.

Many significant projects have been realized with this understanding and nowadays new projects are on the agenda.

With the transport of 75 million cubic meters of water and energy from motherland Turkey to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus our sectors shall have a new acceleration.

Dear People of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, as you know it has always been the Turkish Cypriot side who wants solution and agreement in Cyprus.

We have always searched a solution agreement both before and after 20 th July 1974 Happy Peace Operation.

However a conclusion could not be reached since the Greek side acknowledged itself as the sovereign of the whole Cyprus and did not stop to use the title of so called Republic of Cyprus which it usurped after 21 December 1963 for its own advantage.

I have always stressed; all authorities ever in the motherland Turkey expressed; it is not possible to reach a permanent agreement in Cyprus by ignoring the present realities.

These realities are very clear.

After 20 July 1974 there has been a new geography and two separate states, two separate peoples, two separate democracies and two separate sides on this geography.

An agreement which shall be reached in Cyprus should be based on these realities and should include our sovereign equality and full and effective guarantee of motherland Turkey.

I have been stressing since I have become the President that if there is a will we shall reach a permanent agreement until the end of 2010.

All contacts and proposals I have made are directed towards this aim.

We have no enmity towards anyone.

We are the children of a peaceful nation.

We do not want anyone’s territory, sovereignty and state.

We want our region to be a peaceful and prosperous place.

Very good speech but words mean nothing without action..We know someone who works at the university's and they are treated the same as anyone working in the night clubs they are asked for their passports and if stupid enough to hand them over ! are nothing but human trafficking.each year new staff come and within the month have left run clutching their passports in disbelieve. For this government to see how the rest of the world work they need to learn and be educated..But I guess I have to say that they have come a long way from where they started..and we all have come to understand that progress is very very slow here )
