The police came last night and spoilt a good night at the mambo bar by stopping the music even though everything seemed in order with the licences. They freewheeled in with there lights off how sad is that. I wonder how other bars seem to have music advertised and dont get a visit, there must be a way around this stupid law. What about having a cypriot with the entertainer so he can say its his equipment and the singer is just from the audience. They will ruin all life on this island soon if they are not careful.

Yes....it makes you wonder what the real agenda is.

I would have thought that the cost involved in policing these "illegal" entertainers would far outweigh any extra revenue it may generate.

Let's face it , there must be less than 50 entertainers, all working for a relative pittance, most of whom WANT to be above board and pay their dues.....so how much money is the TRNC actually losing !

This is obviously not just about money,it is another attack on foreigners...be that the entertainers themselves or the tourists / ex-pats who want to see them play !

was it just music ie a DJ or their own music via their own system or an entertainer as DJ is classed as entertainment ure own music can be classed as having a music license and on it goes. there is so much legislation when one you have a bar and two getting the correct licenses and they change the goalposts especially if you are a foreigner with the business. As said on other threads re purchasing property having a a business etc you really have to do it to the letter of the law depending on how often they change the letter

We recently had a few visitors over for a few weeks, and while they thought the place was lovely they did comment that there were very few places open with entertainment on.

If the the interior ministry and the police keep this up there will be nothing on anywhere to attract visitors. Lets face it, tourists can vote with there feet and go anywhere. A very large nail in the coffin.

There was no problem with the entertainer, they just wanted to check the Bar`s license which was in order.

As far as i know, the liqueur licence issued to bars or restaurants does not cover live music, specially if it is amplified electronically.

Many places used to get round this by having musicians playing acoustic guitars and singing without an amplifier.

Playing amplified live music has always required a special permit issued by the district office with the approval of the police.

Its sad that this occurred, as already said the police cost will be high and its doing nobody any good, Mambo is a good bar and deserves better from the authorities, I am waiting for tonight to see if Cardona owned by Malpas hotel gets raided as they have a DJ and go on beyond 3.30 in the morning .

I'd agree with Iceman. Almost certainly, someone had complained about the noise. I have been at venues where this has happened in the past.

Shayna Beach & Cornaro Beach clubs get away with it until the small hours (5am) despite the noise they make. Most of the smaller places don't.

Money talks in the TRNC.

It's the Cornaro not the Cardona. No chance of it closing early. It's been late nights for 2 yrs now.

All drinks licences are until 12 midnight but the police usually give you unti 1am in the summer. Later than that you have tp apply for late licence which allows you until I think 3am and you have to apply on a regular basis. You also need music licence but if cornaro s DJ is turkish cypriot then he doesnt need a work permit and if they have all the relevent licences which I have no doubt they will then they will be open late withou a problem

The police are dong the checks re drinks musicic licences and any entertainers work permits and as far as I know they are checking most places.

Perhaps the Cypriot entertainers are unhappy and can't get a gig.

i fully understand that the laws need to be changed here regarding work permits for the expats but for goodness sakes most of the people complaining here are also the first to complain about freeloaders in the UK so why should here be any different. I remember getting "raided" by immigration while i had my business in the UK because we only employed foreign workers. This goverment might not be the best but they are starting to make changes and they are not aimed at getting rid of the Brits whatever you might all think.

Just my opinion and i am now ready to get shouted at.

Ordinary drinks licences are until midnight for winter months and 1:00am for summer months.

Extension to these hours is only with the approval of the police.

thats what I said but you have to apply via district office and the approval of police. The 1am summer months is at the discretion of police and I assure you ,your ordinary drinks licence is only with the approval of the police and district office too.

All drinks licences are issued by district office with the approval of the police and also local belediye.

By law,1am is summer months closing time and is not at the discretion of police..

I was involved with running bars & clubs for 15 years in the past...i know the law.

It's a great pity that the police and government don't put at least the same amount of energy into fighting corruption and fraud.

If only we had an unexpected inspection wednesday night, they said we were the 7Th non Turkish bar restaurant that night. The sad thing was that very day some kind customer brought a bag in for ismail. & tins of heinz soups. My staff thought they were stock why i do not know. They put them in the cupboard. What did the police check, the dates, they were all out of date. Now I do not think for one second that the people who donated them knew they were out of date by 5 days. They bought them out of date from a supermarket. Guess what confiscated. We wont fine you this time. I tried to explain no good. Please anyone bringing me foods etc can you check for me please x
