Having always arrived in North Cyprus through Ercan Airport this Xmas I am having to travel through Larnaca Airport as only way possible at present. Can anyone advise me what the customs regulations are from North Cyprus back into the South. I have heard that only 40 cigarettes are allowed but do not know about anything else re spirits or gifts etc. Thanks for any advice.

Thank you for your response. Having only ever travelled through Ercan and never anticipating having to fly through the South I don't want to get it wrong.

Cigarettes are cheaper in TRNC,so buy your "fags" here.As for your luggage.....not often thet get searched these days.Your worry should be on the way back with 'roc' authorities.

Actually Yorg, the Pyla crossing (Hope I spelt it correctly) have a new guy working there recently and he speaks perfect english and is being very strict on checks.

One of my friends recently crossed with some over the counter tablets (body building suplements) and they were taken away from him because he had no perscription for them. I personally was travelling with only a laptop bag and very little else but he made me open every compartment.

I am sorry I can't advise about the limits but I thought I should mention that taking a chance might not be worth it at least at Pyla.

There is no ROC checkpoint at Beyarmudu (Pyla) crossing..

The check point after TRNC, is controlled by British customs and excise..

iceman, I made no mention of the RoC.

I merely mentioned the checks at Pyla because it is a fair chance they might be going that way to Larnaca and if they get checked and are over the limits they may end up in trouble.

Your'e information is correct however so let's do this one which I learned from cronos, we are both right and no point in disputing who is more right.

I did not mean to dispute what you said...just defining the type of crossing a Beyarmudu (Pyla) crossing

we are flying back into larnaca next month can remember the way Essentepe to pyla, we didnt exactly get lossed between the crossing and the motorway but mot sure i can remember the way in reverse off the motorway to the crossing can anyone help wiyh directions for that area.

Came back through Famagusta crossing, car infront of me TC had his boot searched, bags of shopping from Carefour, nothing taken. I was waved through, no problem. Going over in the morning, got searched as usual on Greek side, all very pleasant, said they were looking for cigaretts, never stopped at Metahan yet going South.

Your limits for duty free from north to south are the same as you are LEGALLY allowed to take from TRNC back to UK IE: 200 cigs and 1litre of spirit, however once you get them across the border as far as the UK borders are concerned you have travelled from Larnaca inside the eu so that quota applies

Thanks to everyone for their advice and information. I will heed all your comments and hope that everything goes well. Always flying in the past through Ercan I had never given a thought about this until having to arrive in Larnaca due to the demise of KTHY.

Bully, Legally you may take 200 cigs, but if Greeks find them they will be taken away, so do not go there. As I said before, everytime I go over the Famagusta border, like everyone else, they stop you and search the car asking for cigarettes. If they have a wiff of cigarette smoke you will not get away without a complete search for sure. I do not smoke so car never has a smokey smell.

Legally you can only take 40 cigarettes from north to south take a look at the following:-

Article 6 para 2 quotes 1 litre of spirits and 40 cigarettes allowed to cross North to South.

Also re 13

You may assuming the SBA Policeman at the 'Famagusta' ( Black Knight / 2/ 4 mile crossing, etc ) check point is a Greek speaking CYPRIOT.. he / she might be a TC.. !

Can you still cross into Pyla / Pile and buy Efes, etc and put it in the case home ?

Without wishing to appear pedantic, the Beyarmudu crossing is on the edge of the Western Soverign Base Area (WSBA) and is called Pergamos (GC and British-based personnel) not Pyla (Pile), which is another village some 4 kms west of the actual crossing point. Whilst this may not be important to those living here, visitors relying on accurate travel routes from Larnaca or Paphos airports need to have the best possible chance of success. The crossing from north to south involves SBA Customs & Excise personnel, not RoC officers, and they are, generally, thorough in their checks.

Ref Msg 9 - I have a decent route card if you still need directions. If so, let me know your email address and I will forward it to you.

tomsteel, I would also appreciate a route card if you would not mind sending me one, I have always been driven to the crossing by someone else in the past and am still not sure of the route.

Thanks, Paul
