I think there are enough stray and abandoned dogs about already without breeding any more, i can see from your previous posts that this could turn out to be a nice little earner for you - http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/39410.asp

I have to agree, with msg 2. All about money, there are plenty of unfortunate ill treated animals around on this island. Put an ad in your local shop!!

And how much do you expect to sell these pups for? Don't you think there are enough stray dogs about without you deliberately breeding them. Get real!

if somebody actually buys a puppy the chances of said puppy becoming abandoned is very unlikely ,give the poster a chance , most bitch dogs need to have a litter to settle them down .

general attitude of Cypriots is that,if they have a female dog they think they SHOULD breed it..

Specially,if its a breed pups can fetch money...

Usually they have absolutely zero knowledge on breeding and they tend to get rid of the pups as soon as the bitch cannot support them (around 3-4 weeks)

Msg 5 - absolute nonsense, same as the myth a bitch should have one season before being spayed. If that is allowed, your house will be surrounded by dogs, she will spot everywhere, whine to get out and do her thing, will have to be accompanied outside on a leash when she needs to go out - nightmare - any Vet worth his salt will say if you are going to spay your bitch, do it as soon as.....he will advise you when she is old enough to accommodate the surgery.

Any dog or bitch to be neutered/spayed should be allowed to to complete their biological maturity first.

They should not be prematurely spayed/neutered according to the owners convenience..

If you can't handle a bitch on at least one heat period don't get one!!

"Benefits of spaying or neutering

Spaying and neutering should be the natural choice for all pet owners. Apart from population control, there is clear evidence that early neutering is better for the health of the individual animal. When to Do It?

The latest recommendations from surgical staff at UCD are that neutering should be carried out at an earlier age than has previously been suggested. It is now recommended that both male and female dogs should be neutered/spayed at 5-6 months of age. What is the Evidence for Health Benefits of Spaying or Neutering?

For female dogs spaying obviously prevents pyometra, but the effect on mammary cancer is the most significant health reason for early spaying of bitches (before their first season). Mammary cancer is the most common type of cancer in the bitch (52% of all tumours) Around 50% of mammary tumours are malignant

Spaying a bitch at a young age dramatically reduces the risk of mammary cancer.

Statistics showing the percentage risk of mammary tumours developing in the spayed bitch compared to the intact bitch:

Neutered prior to first oestrus: 0.05%

Neutered between first & second oestrus: 8%

Neutered after second oestrus: 26%

Neutered after 2.5 years or 4 oestrus cycles: No effect

Therefore, if a bitch is neutered before her first season, she is 2,000 times less likely to develop mammary cancer than if she is left entire until she is three years of age.

I am not against neutering/spaying family pets....its just the timing i do not agree...

But there are statistics and medical studies that support otherwise..

It does say further down the article, that breed of dog is germane as to when spaying or neutering should be considered - I know nothing of Rottweilers - maybe being such large dogs, has some relevance?
