Good info, in this hot weather....

Drinking the right amount of water will have a hugely positive effect on your health and wellbeing –

so how can you ensure that you’re getting the right amount?

Most of us know how essential water is to leading a healthy life, but it's easy to underestimate the amount that your body needs to operate at its best.

Your body can only survive for a few days without water because we have no reserves of it in our bodies.

A simple way to calculate your ideal water intake is to divide your body weight in pounds by half, and drink that many fluid ounces of water per day.

For example, if you weigh 140 lbs, you should drink at least 70oz of water daily,

which is about eight or nine glasses of a normal-sized glass.

You can use the weight tracker on My Health Info to keep a record of your weight -

and therefore your water needs.

pure water - output plus 550 mls per 24 hours is the basic requirement- that is with NO alcohol intake plus normal dietary intake. So get the measuring jugs out.

i drink as much as my body tells me it needs. If you stop going to the loo or if your wee is very dark then you are dehydrated.

I typically drink about 10lites a day of fluids and my wee is clear.

Alcohol of course will bring on dehydration so that and any hard physical work plus really excessive sweating should be taken into account when you calculate your needs.

If you feel thirsty - you'll already be dehydrated! Half your body weight is made up of fluids and because so much of that is lost each day (through normal elimination processes as well as excessive sweating), it all has to be replaced in order to maintain a healthy balance. Out in Cyprus when temps are as high as they are, one expects to lose more fluids - not only during the day but also at night. (Not hot flushes, either!). The only way the body can try to regulate its temperature in hot weather, is through sweating. But sweat loss includes the loss of vital minerals. So, just replacing lost fluids with lots more of the same isn't enough on its own. In extreme conditions you also have to take in additional 'electrolytes' (salts & phosphates) with your 3 or 4 litres of daily water. I've carried sea salt with me when out in NC and had a good lick of that followed by a long swig of water. It really is a reviving experience!

'I was sitting on a Girne pier,

Sucking tubes of Efes beer,

With a coupla three kebabs inside of me,

But when I swallowed the last gristly lump,

I really felt a chump,

As I chundered in the blue Mediterranean sea!

During this hot and humid weather, one sure sign that a person needs extra salt is if one experiences twinges of cramp!
