I know they can't help it but why are politicians - from Obama downwards - so dishonest? Many of them must be inteligent enough to know that 'talks' are bound to fail, as it is far too late for a two state solution (unlike in Cyprus where it is now too late for a one state solution). The Palestinians' land is now broken into too many pieces by Jewish settlements to ever make a 'country'. The only hope is that in two or three generations a one-state solution will evolve - with all citizens having equal rights in a secular state (all religious political parties have to be banned). They would also - of course - need a change of name. Perhaps "The Holy Land" might suit most people?

A one state solution with Cyprus ended with the Annan plan. The North will never accept less than that and the South will never agree to that. I guess they will want to talk for yet one more year (to Dec 2011), before the inevitable two state solution becomes fact. Then, over time, they can evolve closer ties.

Was reading in the paper today that the GCs refuse to recognise Ercan control tower so how can we reach agreement on anything? It puts lives at risk.
