Hippo I will try to answer this for you . Hope you dont mind Paul.

The history of rugby league as a separate form of rugby football goes back to 1895 in Huddersfield, Northern England when the Northern Rugby Football Union broke away from the established Rugby Football Union to administer its own competition.[1] Similar schisms started occurring later in Australia and New Zealand in 1907, and the new governing bodies gradually changed the rules of their sport, creating a new professional form of rugby football.

Swinton and Pendlebury are the oldest rugby League club. and I think liverpool St Helens is the oldest rugby Union club .

But the Best club in the world without a doubt is Wigan RLFC I think Wigan atheltic are trying to emulate our rugby club with the amount of goals they are losing by LOL .
