RE msg 2: (...) but whats the point (...)

=> Now what is wrong with Rigby's post?! It's news (btw: was Mr Asil Nadir really on board..?) and it has a lot to do with Northern Cyprus. "What's the point?" could have been asked today again about many other posts.

The point is he is a huge figure in Northern Cyprus and him returning to the UK is big news both here and in Blighty!

Do you think it was smoke screen DC and he's really going in undercover on a jetski?

An interesting story with lots of ramifications. I only hope that justice prevails..... whatever that means. I was sitting next to a Turkish Cypriot lady on my Pegasus flight back from England and she said her parents knew him from his London days. She reckoned that he was a real scoundrel. I wonder what medical treatment he thinks will be better in London in comparison to the best Turkish hospitals that he will have access to? Ronnie Biggs springs to mind!

I am intrigued to know whether it is a serious medical problem or a longstanding association with some stalwarts of the Tory party.

At least rigsby's post has a relevance to North Cyprus, unlike a lot of posts on here especially the ones about football.

Top posting. Never been off Sky News with a follow on documentary tomorrow. What could be more relevant to UK residents and Ex Pats in The TRNC.

They just interviewed Asil Nadir on the ITV news - when the interviewer asked why he had gone to a country with no extradition- he said that the country should be recognised.

Also, is he going on an NHS waiting list or did he keep up his BUPA payments?

Measy, I am not jumping to conclusions. Both reasons have been suggesteded for his return to the UK, along with the possibility that the lack of extradition treaties might no longer be the case in light of any settlement. It has been reported that the last time he sought to return was just prior to the Annan Plan. I was just speculating about the reason why he has chosen to go now.

My late dad, a very wise man, always said that Nadir was the scapegoat for a lot of the bent Tory politicians who made 'stacks-a-money' from the shares in Polly Peck at that time before they fell, and he was paid to leave before he could be questioned about the affair. The watch from Mates for example. Why would he decide now to come back, unless he has something to tell. Of course it could be that even he can't afford to live in TRNC anymore!

As I said in a previous post the story is NOT that he has returned to the UK but WHY NOW !!

Its a huge risk. If found guilty of the charges at his age the likely length of sentence will mean he will spend the remainder of his life in prison.

The SFO have had nearly 2 decades to ensure that their case is sound. He HOPES that a change of GOV will assist his case IT WILL NOT.

The UK is NOT the TRNC and the GOV has no power to influence the outcome of this case.

You have to balance the hugh risk he has taken against the possible benefit and I can think of only two possible reasons why someone would take such a risk.

1.A serious medical matter which can only be dealt with in the UK (He looked fairly healthy on the TV)

2.He has been warned that the status of the TRNC is likely to change in the near future and that his bolt hole would no longer be safe. This being the case he would likely be advised it is better to surrender yourself than be extradited.

Otherwise WHY risk it

I seriously doubt that the SFO or their predecessors have given it more than 10 minutes thought until he got his ruling recently that his bail etc was illegal. That was obvious years ago when his pilot won his appeal on the same grounds after being locked up for shifting Asil out of the country.
