Official lady from the Government, badge to prove it, coming round enquiring how many people lived in the property, occupation etc.? When asked why, just said Government! Very good English and polite and friendly. Filled in details and left.

Were you singing in the shower at the time?.....did she ask for your Entertainers licence?

Just out of interest,is your property a domestic dwelling or a business premises?

Can they just turn up without warning and start asking questions?

How do you know the badge is genuine?

No I was not singing in the shower, this was about 7pm, she had what looked like official looking forms and two kids with her and a fairly decent looking vehicle. Asked about our neighbours left and right of ours, then went to our next neighbours who are retired TC's

I had someone call in summer 2007 to ask whether we owned the property or were renting it. I assumed they were checking that they were getting any rental tax that was due. Have not had anybody round since, though.

Yes, we had a guy round in May this year asking if we were the owners of our house. He asked us for proof and we told him to come back next day, when we would produce our utility bills. Never saw him again.

If he WAS from the govt surely he wouldn't need proof?

He would have a copy of your registered contract.

Officials would not come on their own .They are always sent as a pair for safety reasons.

Yes previous posts are right no government official would come round on their own they always travel in pairs or threes. At least they have transport now in times gone by you had to travel to Girne to collect them to take them to your house & then take them back. Guess what they were not always available having made the appointment for you to collect them!

Sounds like a check on properties in time for the annual property tax due in September, I believe.

The last time we had a census here about 5 years ago we were not allowed out of our homes until they had visited you at home or after 6pm if anyone can remember it.

So,benefits officials in UK can call round your house without prior appointment just becase you have a boyfriend that has his own bussinesses, though not living there, and be able to stop your benefits on the spot because the so called BOYFRIEND can afford to pay to look after the family, and this takes place in one of the so called most advanced countries in the world, yet somehow when TRNC official calls round houses for whatever reason,it is out of order!!!

Grow up people,it takes place everywhere.

Yorgo.....yes we have a quaint custom in the UK of trying to crack down on benefit cheats.

It may not appeal to everyone, but they are the rules.

Anyone who doesn't like it obviously has the option to leave !

Does this sound like some of the helpful comments we get on here when people question the laws/rules in the TRNC ?

Does above apply to ENGLISH as well?If so,is that why you were living out here?If so,is that why you had now gone back to UK,because you had found out that 'it is the same everywhere'?

re 8 - you meant Cypriot - Greek speaking - of course ! Why would a Greek be 'interested' ?!

Don't 'encourage' the small minority of GCs who proclaim to BE 'Greek'

Yorgo....msg 26

I don't really understand your response but never mind.

You know nothing about me and just make general assumptions based on your overall views about Brits in TRNC.

For your information I never lived in TRNC...we had a holiday home.

We sold up after 5 years because the TRNC covertly refuses to give PTP on Pre-74 Turkish Title property.

Your attitude to foreigners in the TRNC leaves a lot to be desired.

Advising people to pack up and go home if they don't like it is not the way forward.

And whilever TC's such as yourself, either in TRNC or from the comfort of London, continue to defend the corruption and inequity that is now coming to the attention of a wider world, then your government will take that as a mandate to carry on as they are.

Just had two guys knock on my door, they said they were from the tax office. Asked me a few questions, nothing to get worked up about, but they seemed to be more interested in the other properties on the complex, asking me if any units were for rent, or if they were rented out to holiday makers. Maybe there is a crackdown on rental income tax!!

cronos....msg29;

Not once I have defended the corroption in TRNC and I never WILL .

As for 'lving in comfort of London'!I'd correct that if you dont mind to Kent and I must have missed out on the so called "comfort".Unles, these days it means working 16 hours a day to pay your duties and bring up a family, only for it all to be taken away from you through broken marriage.

See my point!Law stinks in UK as well.

However,my whole point has always been,"you've made the bed.........."

Unles everyone starts to take some responsibility things are never gonna get better........

Only last night I met and English guy who persistantly kept telling me "he refuses to pay a local for any work/jobs in his house".

If that isn't an encourgement for 'working illegaly',then what IS I dont know.

Now,imagine how many foreign owned properties are being let without the knowledge of government?

Then, imagine the possibilities of this taking place in UK!!!

I rest my case.
