A guarantee is only as good as the person or company giving the guarantee and should not be needed if legislation protects consumers. Pay by credit card and you have an automatic EU standard guarantee.

Your guarantee is guaranteed NOT to be guaranteed by the guarantor!

I have found here that the handshake is the only guarantee worth having - paper is not worth it for sure and as a lot of things are imported to a country that has no legal standing the guarantee that comes with them is worthless - unless the person supplying them has integrity!

When ever I have purchased anything from a local outlet and talked man to man with the seller about any guarantee, I have always found it to be better than any paper guarantee I have had from a seller in the UK.

It is a different system but if you understand it, then it works.

I find a receipt is also useful, something that isn't always forthcoming.

Your reference to credit cards made me think of this hypothesis.

Most people aren't aware that you can pursue the credit card company in respect of faulty goods, poor service.cancelled flights etc EVEN IF YOU ONLY PAID PART OF THE TOTAL COST WITH THE CREDIT CARD.

For example,if you paid the deposit on a car by credit card, and paid the balance by cheque, you can still pursue the credit card company for the FULL amount if the car turns out to be unroadworthy and the dealer won't give you your money back or repair it.

Now.....what would happen if you paid the initial deposit on a property in TRNC with a credit card , and you subsequently ended up with an incomplete house.....or you didn't get title deeds....or it was auctioned from under you?

Could you pursue the credit card company for your total loss ?

It's worth thinking about !

cronos,

Interesting theory, we paid our initial deposit with a credit card and after four and a half years we still haven't got our title deeds. Don't think our credit card company would be interested though, after all we were all warned not to buy in the TRNC.

Butlers wife,

Go on...give it a try !

Even though you say "after all we were all warned not to buy in the TRNC. ".....the credit card company processed the transaction and are therefore complicit and should shoulder the responsibility.
