Read this too. Was on the Cyprus Mail on-line news portal. Considering the stats from a recent survey that showed that 72% of Greek Cypriots did not feel safe going to the North I wonder if the Love bus will be titanium clad with re-enforced bullet proof heart shaped glass windows!

I wonder if it will be a love bug?

Buses have been coming over for ages. Go to Belepais and see them lined up at the top. When the tourists come over they are told not to buy anything and not too bring credit cards. I was told this by the jeweller in the harbour.

If they are coming over portraying peace & love then at Metehan the GC tour guide should be removed from the bus and replaced with one from here.

That way they can get the GC version on first part of journey and TC version on second part. Let the paying customer then decide the truth for themselves, or at least have an option for discussion.

Here is article from Cyprus Mail

Poll sheds light on Greek Cypriot feelings over north

By Marianna Pissa

THE MAJORITY of Greek Cypriots welcome contact with Turkish Cypriots, but only a small minority chooses the occupied regions as a venue for such interactions.

According to a poll conducted by NOVERNA Consulting & Research on behalf of Politis newspaper, carried out from July 16-23, the results are based on aspects of security, and matters of “principle”.

Seventy-five per cent of Greek Cypriots believe that it is “good” to have contacts with Turkish Cypriots even before a solution to the island’s division is found, establishing the belief that, without meaningful communication there can be no hope for future coexistence.

Moreover, the fact that this result does not vary significantly by age groups is a sign that the negative sentiments towards Turkish Cypriots expressed by young people until recently has started to turn.

In contrast, the proportion of the population that has visited the north remains stable at 60 per cent, showing essentially that the recent opening of Ledra Street has made things easier for the regular visitors to the north, however it has not given prospective visitors an incentive to visit.

Moreover, according to Politis, the frequency of visits is limited, as only one in four of those who have gone have been there more than twice.

The intention to cross over within the next 12 months is relatively low – with only 25 per cent saying they plan to visit. On the other hand, those who have not visited the north still feel the same, with less than one in ten declaring their intention to visit it in the future.

The reasons given as to why Greek Cypriots do not cross north are quite interesting, as they tend to reveal the general attitudes and concerns of Greek Cypriots in relation to the Cyprus problem.

A substantial majority say they don’t go north as a “matter of principle”, which has mainly to do with showing a passport or identity card, which they perceive as a recognition of the pseudo-state. Seventeen per cent of those who do not go also state directly that they do not visit the north “to not spend money there and finance the occupying regime”.

The results reflect to a large extent a “politically correct” attitude. These perceptions show that security and the presence of the Turkish army and settlers are the main factors as to why Greek Cypriots refrain from visiting the occupied regions.

Specifically, 72 per cent of Greek Cypriots believe that when you go to the north, you are not safe, while 65 per cent believe that the presence of the Turkish army and settlers is the only thing stopping them from crossing.

In addition, there is also the perception that going over “harms our interests”. Fifty-five per cent of respondents believe that those who do not go to the north protect our interests.

This attitude probably stems from the perception of a significant proportion of Greek Cypriots who believe visiting the north supports the regime politically and financially.

However, the social stigma of going to the north seems to have disappeared, with only 21 per cent believing that our society must condemn those who cross over.

In addition, 40 per cent of those polled believe those who have pride do not visit the occupied territories, while 37 per cent say they feel uncomfortable in the presence of Turkish Cypriots.

There will be a Greek and a Turkish Cypriot guide on board:

Here is the story:

Greek Cypriot launches ‘love bus’ to the north

By Leo Leonidou

(archive article - Tuesday, August 5, 2008)

A BUS service ferrying tourists from the capital to places of interest in the north is due to start operating later this month.

Named the Love Buses, the aim is to bring the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities closer together, according to the man behind the scheme.

“We are one island but we have been divided and not seen a solution to the Cyprus problem despite more than 30 years of trying,” Leontios Christou told the Mail yesterday.

“I hope that this service will be a means of rapprochement and will provide many interesting things to do and see,” he said.

Buses will pick up people from their hotels at 9am, before heading off to Saint Hilarion, Bellapais and Kyrenia, before returning to Nicosia in the evening. Tickets are priced at €50.

“At each point of the route, passengers will be able to get off the bus and explore the place, at their own leisure,” explained Christou.

Both a Greek and Turkish Cypriot tour guide will be on board to provide historical information to passengers on places of interest.

Christou also hopes to attract Greek Cypriots, “who would like to see parts of their own country that they may not have seen for a very long time, if ever. Our doors are open to everybody.”

He added that this is “the fist bus service of its kind on the island.”

The fleet will eventually consist of six buses, which each having a capacity of 22. They have been painted white, with the company name in blue on the sides. The look is complemented with red hearts.

The inaugural journey will take place on August 22, with MPs, diplomats and church leaders all invited.

“A trip will take place on a daily basis after this, regardless of how many people have booked. If there is only one person on the bus, so be it,” explained Christou.

The 50-year-old added that he hopes the service will gain in reputation through word of mouth.

“If everything goes well, we hope in the future to expand and run a similar service from the north,” he said.

Great idea and hopefully it will go from strength to strength. I wonder who employs the TC tour guide on the bus. If he's from the other side and paid by them so much the better.

Hi Dodger,

Perhaps they can get Elton John to serenade them on the love bus!

"Don't go breaking my heart" seems appropriate.
