Hi new member here. We are hoping to retire to Northern Cyprus and are coming out in Novembef on a fact finding mission. We are going to be looking at areas to live, house prices and general day to day living. We are looking to rent a 2 or 3 bed villa for the month of November. Any help that we can get would be greatly received.

Thanks Kate

Kate.....welcome to the forum.

Rent a place in November....and if you like it only consider RENTING a property to retire to.

It is not safe to BUY here....you could very easily lose your life savings !

The TRNC has much to offer, but property purchase should be avoided at all costs.

Please read all previous postings on this subject ( should keep you busy for a month ) and make an informed decision.

Good luck !

Wealth Warning

Severe Wealth Warning

Many people visiting Cyprus fall in love with the island and immediately go on a property buying spree. It’s as if they put on their ‘holiday heads’ when they step off the plane throwing common sense and caution to the wind.

Added to this the different business practices, legal systems and cultures, and their dreams of owning property in Cyprus can sometimes turn into expensive nightmares.

Remember to protect yourself by thoroughly researching what could happen if you were one of the many victims of title deed scams, mortgage scams and memorandums.Follow the "no kocan, no money" rule and you will avoid these increasingly common scams.

Have a look a Kayalar, beautiful place, nice and quiet, some nice places to rent or buy. Don't take too much notice of the negative, back biting ,holier than thou people on this forum come and have a look for yourself.

Do your homework first - come rent for a month - then go back and come again in a different season - rent again in a different part of the Island. Then go back and come again in a different season - rent again somewhere. Learn a little Turkish, please and thankyou are good to start with. Rent in a Turkish area - visit shops all over in villages not just the Tempo/Supreme or Starling chains. Do more homework. Don't bring a car! Check on the law time and again becaused it changes by the minute and that is the same for TC's as for anyone else. Don't come here to work - unless you are used to working in 40+ you will not handle it.

The Island is beautiful, the people (Turkish, can not speak for the Greek) are wonderful and the weather is only "Too Bloody Hot" for about 6/8 weeks of the year. The food is good for you and so is the lifestyle - leave your worry and stress behind BUT - do your homework first, lots of it - then you will be OK! Good Luck.

Waddo.....that sounds like genuinely good information.

But I note that you never once advised her to buy a property...just to rent.

Why might that be?

Kate it might be idea to do what we did, obviously not sure of your finances, but we downsized the home we had, that was enough to buy a smaller place in UK and also left enough money to buy outright in Cyprus, so we have always got a bolthole should things turn sour.

We also bought a resale would never consider an off plan development, in saying that it has still not been without its traumas, the Turkish idea of building and shall we say less than the best quality materials, at the moment we are only spending about 2/3 months a year out there, but will probably be spending more next year on.

Up to now we really look forward to coming out there 13 days to go and counting, but doubt whether we could stand the 6 weeks in July and August when it goes right over the top with heat and humidity, also Jan, Feb & March with the damp and winds.

Best of luck with whatever you decide

Msg 1

Google the 'Dom-Toms', worthy of investigation on an EU passport.

I think Richard is suggesting this would be a much better place to retire to!

Richard wish you had made this suggestion to me back in 2005!!!!!

Msg 17

The current colonial Countries under French control, scattered around the World which are, by default, part of the EU and under Brussels regulations. Though, be careful, the 'Doms' are slightly different to the 'Toms' if wishing to have full EU status. Guadeloupe or Martinique are well worth a look at.

just look at all the posts, make your mind up, yes there is so much beauty, there is corruption that could teach the mafia. The animal situation leaves most of us in despair, the government that implements change without warning all to our cost. The auctioning of homes to poor unsuspecting people, it goes on and on. Sorry to be negative when sun sea and mountains overtake these factors

cronos,

It is very simple. When you are learning about the place you may very well spend the rest of your life, you need to see a great deal of it not just one small area. If you buy in one spot and travel around you only get glimpses of the rest. So don't buy - "Until you are sure" - that is why I say come and visit and rent, then go away and think.

You don't buy a new car unless you test drive it do you? So why spend all your money on the house of your dreams only to find out you hate the place because of the cold and damp high in the mountains in the winter? If you only went there in the summer - you would never know!!!!

Kate, Try to stay longer than a month if you can.

Then you can do this in three stages:

1] Two to three weeks holiday (always with rose coloured specs).

2] At least four weeks learning asking questions and getting the feel of your Cypriot and Expat neighbours and potential friends.

3] Three weeks to learn local laws and customs and look at properties to give you an idea

After that return to Blighty for at least two months to clear out the dreams and then return to North Cyprus and see over another four to six weeks if you like it before staring to look at places and costs.

Hi Kate

Others have made the very valid point about getting to know the area/ country and doing your research. I wish I had.

I have a 3 bed Villa in Alsancak which could be available for rent in November. Our Villa is within 300 meters of the Villa centre on a tarmac road with street lights. This may appear a slightly odd thing to mention, but when you arrive in the TRNC you will understand the significance.

Let me know if you are interested and we can contact each other off the site.

Cheers

David
