I took my vehicle for its Mot this morning. when the engine number was checked it was found to be stamped on over the original this could have been done any time in its 15 year history its must have had a new engine at some point in its life. I have had the vehicle for a couple of months. I was taken to the Police station fined 495 TL and had to give a statement.I have to return on moday to get the Police report. Has this happened to any one else? at this moment I,m not sure what the fine was for and I still do not have a valid MOT. Nigel

Nigel They seem quite interested in engine numbers at Mot's, in fact it has been the ONLY item on my vehicle that's been checked during the last 2 Mot's I've had done here, never looked at anything else!!! So, it may be that the engine has been changed since it's last Mot.............pity you didn't insisted the previous owner Mot it before purchase, or maybe that is exactly why he didn't??? Compass

Check when the last MOT was, and then ask the police to question the previous owner. Of course, it might not have been him, but the owner before him, an so on. Why should you have to pay a fine for someone else's misdemeanour? Don't take this lying down - you're [presumably!] not the guilty one, are you?

Engine numbers are part of a car that can be replaced, like suspension, gearbox, etc. Why on earth it's part of the MOT, god only knows. It's the chassis number they should check. Some new American cars do not have engine numbers because of this reason. I imported one and when they could not find it, they took a number off the gearbox !!!!!!!!!!!!

The engine has been replaced at some stage which should have been registered but has not been. They are going to jump all over you until you get it registered I had my engine replaced by Eredener Garage in Catalkoy and they will be able to advise. You need to get emission test, take it to the motor tax office in Lefkosha and get the registrasration document updated and then go to the customs office in Lefkosha. If you are doing this for the first time explain and pay Eredener garage to help you.

The reason they check engine number is because if the engine is replaced they want a tax on it. They are not interested if a car is safe or roadworthy or not as long as the state gets the tax.

Recently there has also been someone caught bringing dodgy cars from the uk. I am not sure of the exact details. I did hear about a similar thing before a few years back. The person gets credit on the car in the UK, then brings it here. Claims on the insurance that it has been stolen and they pay out. I was introduced to the person who had been doing it at that time. So maybe they are just on a clamp down in general?

We had problem with engines in a local vehicle. The previous owner had put another engine in the vehicle & not done the proper paperwork for this. We ended up having to take that engine out & put another one in, as that was the only way we could get it legal.

That will depend on who your cousin knows! Seriously, though, why can't you simply offer to pay the Duty on the engine that's in the car - the one you got [bloody unfairly] fined for? It may pay to inquire at Kumruk - Lefkosa. Did you inquire from the previous owner when the last MOT was done? - Anyway there is bound to be a record. I realise it's impossible to prove you're innocent on this one - sorry you've been caught up in someone else's scam!

Its not really a scam is it tho - its quite normal for an engine to have to be changed - its the only place i know where the engine number is checked for an mot - they could not care less if the brakes dont work - just so long as your engine number matches - oh and you got mud flaps on!
