To last over 400 years and then to be lost through negligence, depressing really.

Perhaps it would have been negligent to left it in a dangerous state with children playing in it. I'm not sure there is enough information in that article to make a judgement on the issue.

Iceman, here's another 'pointless' tourism subject (read page 1 & 2): http://is.gd/eR2PA (I only give the URL because imo it's not necessary to copy all the text and pics - DC)

RE msg 6, JohnW: (...) Perhaps it would have been negligent to left it in a dangerous state with children playing in it (...)

=> I don't think children should play inside a late medieval church - as far as I am concerned not because the church is a 'holy building' but because the church belongs (erm, sorry, belonged) to the cultural heritage of (Northern) Cyprus. And closing the entrance(s) of the church would have been cheap and easy - awaiting better times.

This is NOT negligence..it is more like total disrespect towards other religions and cultures.

JohnW re: msg 6

Perhaps if the administration showed some respect to cultural heritage of Cyprus ( as Hans pointed out) and repaired the church, it wouldn't been in a dangerous state to anyone!!

The Republic of Cyprus in the south is constantly repairing/restoring the cultural heritage of the island...even if it is mosques or buildings left from Ottoman period..

Hans

We are in agreement on this one..

Just another 'black mark' to be logged against TRNC - how shortsighted can whoever allowed this desecration to perpetrated be?

Hardly the best way to attract the desperately needed 'International Sympathy Vote'!

No doubt the GC's will have a 'field day' with this one!

Only a cynic might presume that the stones of the church might come in useful for some village house restoration project..................? !

Someone, in the last government, gave permission for electric pylons to be erected on the flight path of an airport, which is know costing a packet to remove – bulldozing a church by mistake is nothing to these lunatics.

Its an absolute disgrace. They can allow 7 star hotels and casinos, but cant look after their hertiage. Dutch the photos you have shown on your link saddens me to the core. I cant beleive nothing is done.

I know the church.I took some photos just before

it was demolished. It wasn't in use even before '74,either.

There were signs reading 'Dangerous Building'.

bookworm

So what if it wasn't used before 74....does that justify demolishing it?
