Was this gentleman interested in (Northern) Cyprus? If not, well, 82 years old isn't bad and many younger people died today.

Hans. It doesn't matter if he was interested in the TRNC. this is NEWS and a lot of British people throughout the world would be interested in this even if you're not. You posted on a thread a couple of days ago that had nothing to do with the TRNC and I don't recall anyone 'picking you up' on it. Please give it a rest. You're just alienating yourself from the members.

RE msg 8, No1Doyen: (...) Please give it a rest. You're just alienating yourself from the members. (...) => Second time you wrote the same line, Bill. On this board I'm not interested in NEWS from the world (bylines) - there are are far better sources. On this board I'm usually contributing about TRNC matters and I wish moderators - you - would understand the aim of this board: TRNC.

Good man. The people of Rochdale idolised him. He will be missed by the Lib/Dems. Fantastic lifespan for a man of his girth. He enjoyed lifes pleasures. May he R.I.P. wynyardman

I was born and bred in Rochdale and knew Cyril. Not major buddies but we recognised each other and would stop to chat in the street. I first met him when I had a summer job 1 year at Smith Springs (his manufacturing business) - he knew all his people. Another time we were on the same table at the Mayor's charity banquet; the year before he became Mayor himself. He was a very intelligent, knowledgeable and sincere man and I am sure if he had not been so big, and consequently treated by many as a joke, he would have gone a lot further in politics. In later years I worked with Nigel Jones, the Lib Dem MP for Cheltenham, and he several times expressed his admiration for Cyril and thought it a sad thing that he had lost his seat (to a Tory of all things). RIP Cyril

Even though I have never supported the LibDems I still had a great deal of respect and admiration for this giant of a man. He will be sorely missed as one of the great politicians of his time.

Jovial John - I agree. He was a man of the people and his size made him a joke to people who should have known better. He was a great loss to UK politics at the time and now to his family and friends. RIP Cyril XXX

I have never voted Liberal but he was one of the few MPs who I paid heed to and admired and respected for his integrity and, as has been said, made light of his physical size. His physical size was exceeded by his heavyweight reputation for knowledge and fairness. Shame that it is unlikely there will be more like him. I hope that the loss to his family and friends can be softened by the certain knowledge that he did his utmust to make the world a better place for so many.

Like Jovial John I was born and bred in Rochdale...which, like many places oop t'north these days is far removed from the town we loved. Cyril was well liked...I have vivid memories of him being at Rochdale Grammar School Speech days in the 60's delivering his recollections of his days at the school and how his old House had done in the sports competitions etc...my God it really is a world away isn't it!

jimbob, I know. Don't let it spoil your enjoyment of the forum. Most posters are good natured and friendly. Just a shame about the occasional 'Victor Meldrew' character. (At least he was funny )

Abel Tasman, a Dutchman made it to New ZEALAND before James Cook (hence the name) but couldn't land his foot onto it as he couldn't get his leg over (the deck)! Leave Hans alone as he is only mourning the loss of 'gods own' to the Great British Empire! Richard
