With the first direct talks since 2008 taking place now how does the forum think the talks will go? Are they doomed to fail?

There is more chance of Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction suddenly turning up in Iraq than there is of Isreal and Palestine agreeing on the terms for a two-state solution. ISREAL has no intention of embracing the minimum terms for a two-state solution as defined by the international consensus – an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. The PALESTINIAN leader Mr Abbas lacks the political authority to sell any deal to the Palestinians. His term of office has expired, and the last time the Palestinian electorate was asked to vote, they preferred Hamas over his Fatah movement. The last elected Palestinian Govt has no seats on the peace table. From the US SIDE, imposing a two-state solution would require Mr Obama to take the domestic political consequences of a showdown with Israel. His record so far suggests that is unlikely.......

contd.... The two-state solution is premised on the Palestinians accepting statehood in Gaza and the West Bank rather than a return to land lost in 1948. But Israel currently controls 42 per cent of West Bank land, and it has illegally settled close to half a million of its citizens there, as well as in East Jerusalem. Half of that total were settled during the Oslo years, when the peace process was at its most promising. And the idea that Israel will have to end its occupation of that land as part of a peace agreement is no longer conventional wisdom in Israel. Added to that, Isreal is set to expand their illegal occupation with yet more settlers to keep govt suppt from the right going. Unless the US is prepared to join with international partners and impose a two-state solution, Mr Obama is in fact presiding over its funeral.

They should have bit the bullet and included Hamas in the talks, however much it hurt. See N.Ireland and Sinn Fein.

RE msg 4, phylray: (...) They should have bit the bullet and included Hamas in the talks, however much it hurt. (...) => Hamas sollicited to be included in the peace talks by killing 4 Israelis two days ago and two Isralis a day ago. P.S. Look how the Palestinians prosper in Gaza where they are ruled by Iran supported (guns, money, more guns) Hamas. P.P.S. Al Fatah is Israels partner if there ever is going to be some sort of peace in our corner of the world.
