Postponing until when?

I thought the whole Cyprus problem was going to be sorted by the end of this year?

Or was that last year?

Or the year before that?

The recent meeting was never going to end in a decision. EU will see how the peace talks have progressed at the end of the year and then - hopefully - they will make a decision and fulfill their promises.

The opinion was discussed at the Legal Committee but a vote on the issue will likely be postponed due to the absence of the German rapporteur, MEP Kurt Lechner, from Brussels this week. I believe they will decide that Direct Trade is illegal but their decision is not binding if the issue is then put to a vote.

The UK's DEFRA should have also reviewed the TRNC situation regarding pets in the EU, they were ment to be standardising/ reviewing. Apparently from their website it was supposed to be done in June this year.

They have posponed that as well. December next year is the date they have given, so i wouldn't hold your breath on direct trade.

Well, a yes vote might go a long way in convincing a TRNC to say yes to a solution. A no, or no decision, will prove again that the EU cannot be trusted to safe guard our interests, with the opposite result.

To be fair it is not exactly the EU that has copped out.

They have proposed several times to implement direct trade (as promised in 2004) but the decision was subject to the veto rules and...guess what...our friends in the South vetoed it.

However, since the Lisbon Treaty, it is now a matter for majority decision so they want to try again. But the South has now objected that direct trade agreements are for non-EU countries and that TRNC is legally in the EU so it cannot be granted direct trade. It is the legal issues around this that are currently being debated.

As i unnderstand it the South no longer has the power to veto.Or have the goal posts been moved again,

Paul.

you're right newlad, it's about 75% to get Direct Trade through if it ever comes to the vote

I had heard that the eu powers that be ,had given a dead line of december 2010 for the vote on this issue to be heard , regardless of the delaying tactics being used by GC and allies.

i hope i heard right , cant find the link for this ruling ..anyone more info ??

the 2010 deadline is a guideline which Turkey says should be followed because there seems to be a delaying tactic used by the south which punishes TRNC even though they voted YES to the Annan Plan in 2004. The deadline is to show Turkey's impatience and is backed up with a warning that Turkey has a Plan B they intend to implement if no solution is found. Guess we'll have to wait to see what that is
