Hopefully the pilot will always be in good health who is going to land the plane if he has a heart attack?

This man will say anything for publicity. The more people get outraged at his comments the happier he is. And the next time he offers a penny off the price of a flight, there will be a rush for tickets.

Same outrage when consultant nurses were introduced in the UK- now we could not run without them. Its all about qualifications, expertise and skill mix ( not to mention money). At least nurses are regulated by a national body under strict qualifications and skill set - what about the 'stand in pilots', that would be my question? After all we are hopefully are not talking about the likes of the auxilliary helper in nursing running the intensive care area!

If they are going to train up the air hostesses to fly the plane in an emergency then surely this won't be cost effective - cost if training , extra wages for the air hostess etc...

any one person can only keep up their skills set when they use them. So my worry would be how often would 'stand-ins' ever be called to use them? maybe i should forget my fatalsitic approach once the plane has taken off and try my hand at taking over if there is an emergency?

Well I've been a Captain for a long time and my co-pilots are some of the best and most skilled people in the business, trained exceptionally and in one of the most tested professions in the world, 4 days simulator, route checks and class one medicals each year. Perhaps that idiot Mr O Leary will concentrate on doing what he's good , which is scrimping costs to the bone by using legitimate methods rather than standing up sections and fat taxes/toilet taxes etc. If he came into a simulator session and 'tried' to help out when things went badly wrong he might get a surprise, more so in real life. Maybe he should explain what happened with one of his 'contract' flight crews into Rome a few years ago, good job there were two on that flight deck that day! Mind you it gets people mentioning Ryanair which is exactly why he does it! Cheers Stu

Brill response Stu-my feelings exactly - particulary as I pack and weigh my case tonight for a trip out tomorrow. All should do the job they are qualified for although so many times I find people wanting to do my job after being on the internet or watching daytime TV! need I say more Best wishes

Bill in my days we were actually trained to help the co pilot should a sitution arise, Mr o Leary is a prat who use any publicity and it works for him. However I think he has gone too far. Where safety is involved it has to be a priority. OK the loo situation, standing room only i can forgive as we all know what its for, This would scare people. If he offered me a pound ticket and I have to admit to taking many offers to go to Dublin or Trieste for a pound plus, i would tell him where to put it

I went with BA to Heathrow last year, a lady captained the plane. Must admit I was a bit worried after hearing a Jim Davidson routine on this scenario, however, she made a beautiful, straightforward landing. Took an hour and a half to park it though
