The BP well which spilled 206m gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico poses no further risk to the environment, says the US official leading the clean-up.

Was not a BP rig, was an American rig subcontracted by bp with non BP workers operating the rig, the american company who owned and operated the rig just kept there head down and let BP take all the blame, BP is now sueing the other company for negligence and to claim all the money back spent.

need to get facts right all

Why are BP pledging $20billion for the clean-up?

BP would like it to be that simple. It maybe that Transoceon and Haliberton will end up with a share of the blame but BP were the "operator" of the rig and are ultimately responsible for anything the subcontractors do.

It is possible that the US coastguard will come in for some flack. They were responsible for the firefighting efforts. They allowed water to be used instead of foam. This destabilised the rig and maybe caused it to sink. It is thought to have fallen and damaged equipment on the sea floor causing or making the leak worse - maybe.

This whole thing is so complex that they will be argueing it in court for the next ten years.

Gavin. I bet they end up paying a lot more than the $20million.

No 1 Doyen,

It is currently $5.6Billion. They have pledged $20 Billion.

But that is just a drop in the ocean to BP (excuse the pun)

I take RogerDogers point that they will try to recover some of the costs from Transocean,Haliburton and

possibly Cameron Iron Works Then there are possibilities from The US Coastguard.

May struggle with Haliburton and The Coastguard. They are in effect THE US secret Government.

Just my view, thats all.

My apologies. Anyway I still think it will cost them much more than the $20 billion.

I read an article the other day that stated that the "worst environmental disaster the USA had ever had"...err ...never happened!!

Apparently most of the Gulf Coast shrimp fishermen etc got loadsa compensation...as a bonus...since they can now fish OK and are catching better than before! Apparently most of the oil was "eaten" by bacteria thriving on it in the tropical conditions of the Gulf of Mexico. There was only one pic of a distressed Pelican that did the rounds if I'm not mistaken!

I think the Exxon Valdez was much worse. Any comment?

You don't even need a pan... just set a flame to 'em on your plate and they cook themselves!

Just a few billion that will not incur any corporation tax. They would have paid a large chunk of the profits to the American government anyway so not so much of a big deal for BP really.

Exactly Cheggers,

Knock off the tax, cancel the dividend, and recover the rest .Sue the Coastguard, and I can see this one making

a few bob for the shareholders. I suppose theres no need to be "crude" about it!

BP shares start to climb. A little relief for some hard pressed pensioners that rely on them.
