I agree. The 0870 number is a ripoff.

Paul, sometimes you can dial certain companies from here with the 0044 before the 0870, and other companies don't accept it.

Far too many serious people I'm afraid, I was being silly. Dialled 0870 and got no answer was meant to be a joke but thanks anyway both of you lovely ladies for trying to be helpful.

In some cases an 0870, 0845 or 0871 numbers do not give you options. If they don't I suggest that as a rule you don't boycot them at first but call and get a landline number. (At least they have a number; never trade with a company or person you cannot call.) At IAH we have an 0871 number (we do both show you our Skype and land line numbers too). In our case the 0871 number does help to offset the cost of the high number of "information only" - then I will buy direct or I have bouight direct now need your advice! calls coming in and our policy to call clients worldwide without hesitation

Excellent link. I checked a couple of sites: T-Mobile & Sky TV. It works. Thanks.

If you have an Android smartphone, download the app "say no to 08". When you dial any number starting with 08 your phone will automatically connect to the internet and find, if available, a landline number. Saves a fortune when using a mobile. Mike.

0871 number's tariffs have got to be be advertised - there are strict rules about this. Not all 0871 numbers are a "ripoff" - as usual on here - generality rules!

All 08 numbers from a mobile are a rip off as non geographical so not included in contract allowances. Mike.

I dialled a 0871 number the other day and got the impression the guy at the other end was wasting time in order to rack up the charges. Many thanks for an excellent post.
