The petrol ones suffer from head gasket problems and can cost a fortune to sort out.

Rigsby is right the 1.8 petrol engine (same as the mgf) had a shallow head gasket and is prone to blow between cylinder 1 & 2 oil/water ports unless a later vehicle when a modification was in place. Think chassis number check at Landrover will tell. A very strange situation where MG admitted there was a design fault and contributed to mods and Landrover didnt !!! same engine !!! 2.0 diesel better option but heavier hence more road tax. regards Barry

Avoid any 'Freelander' - they are BAD NEWS; which, if you go ahaead and buy one, you'll soon find out!

However, if you're so determined - better to buy TWO - so that, with a LOT of luck, you'll have one driveable, whilst the other is in the garage for repair!

They should all have a warning sticker, saying: 'This Vehicle May Prove Hazardous To Your Bank Balance!'

Google the K Series engine and your search for a Freelander will come to an abrupt end ..... the engine was so prone to failing that Rover in their widsom put it in the 200, 400 , 600 & 800 series and then continued with MGF, MGTF Rover 25, 45 & 75 and the Freelander..... absolute shite engine design..... I had a 100% failure rate when I used to sell MGF/TF but I had a man that could repair them in his sleep..... seen some horrific bills for head repair £600 upwards ........Stick to Japanese ( RAV, CRV etc ) tad boring but reliable

I would strongly recommend the Toyota Rav. I have had one for 4 years, has never missed a beat in over 40,000km of driving. Comfy, well equipped and a nice drive.

Judy I have a friend who is selling their Freelander diesel engine, but am not sure of the price. Please let me know if you are still interested by return.

Early Toyota Rav [even the short wheelbase] was a thirsty little beast - I know this because I used to drive ours regularly from Paphos to Larnaca, picking up cobbers from the airport!

However, they are a bit more solid and reliable than [early] Suzuki Vitara.

Having to fork out to fix any 'Toymotor' [Jap!] in Cyprus can prove a very nasty shock to the bank balance - go for the latest you can afford and, however much tempted, DO NOT buy anything [with an internal combustion engine!] pre-owned by a Cypriot!

Nothing wrong with the Freelander diesel as long as it's got the BMW engine.

The Td4 (2001 -2007) is a BMW diesel engine. Now they use a Peugeot diesel I believe.

Never think BMW = reliability/longevity - I had a BMW 525 [same engine as in 'Freelander'] - one of the most unreliable and costly to fix 'heaps' I ever owned!

You should have put oil in it...

The BMW in the Td4 I had was a 2 litre. not 2.5.

Never had a problem with the engine... A small problem with a fuel sensor but that was subject to a manufacturer's recall that went un-addressed for a while due to main dealer here not paying attention.

Good mileage - up to 50 mpg. good torque - could go over the mountains fully loaded in 5th.

My only beef was the headroom and size of accommodation - it was really not tall enough and the boot is quite small.

Newer models address this issue.
