Hi guys.

New here. Will be going to Cyprus for 1st time on Fri 17th Sep and need some info on Pyla border crossing.

We are arriving and Larnaca airport at 21:00 and have hired a car so will be driving straight there.

Would like to know cost of insurance and office opening hours.

If they are not open what should we do??

I don't want to be stranded at the border on our first trip there! lol

Any help will be much appreciated.

I think the insurance office is open untill 21:00 every day, I have a mobile number for the insurance lady, I will look it out for you. Give her a call 30mins or so before you arrrive at the crossing and she will meet you there

Thanks very much. That would be great as it seems it will definitely be closed when we arrive.

Can I just ask, is this number that you have recent and correct?

Also, on the off chance, would you know what is the best road map to buy for Cyprus?

I'm trying to buy the Rough Guide Map of Cyprus but it is out of stock everywhere and the new edition will never actually get printed according to Penguin Books who are their publishers :(

If you arrive too late go via the Ayios Nicholos crossing point into Famagusta open 24/7

RoKaBe, get the care hire company to get your insurance for the north (I think it costs an extra €10, making €35 total cost) for the minimum period of 1 month. There is NO crossing at Pyla, the crossing is at Pergamos some 5 kms west of Pyla (Pile). Send me your email addres and I will forward a route card. Where is your destination in the north?

Thanks for the replies guys. Much appreciated.

Hatty - If you can supply me with that phone number it would be great.

Geoff - is that the border AND the insurance kiosk that's open 24/7... or just the border?

Tom Steel - RE no crossing at Pyla... from reading on this forum I was aware that it is not strictly at Pyla but it seems to be commonly referred to as that. Also easier to type

RE getting the insurance company... I might well do that, although if not necessary I won't as no point spending the extra Euros.

Our destination is Buyukkonuk (Komi Kebir) and email is rokabe1@hotmail.com

Thanks!

Hi again RoKaBe,

OK ref Pyla/Pergamos, as long as you know. Is Buyukkonuk near Mehmetiçk, north of Iskele? If so, my route card will take you to the Geçitkale/Tatlisu/Iskele road junction, heading for Iskele. Once I know, I will fire it off.

Why don't you give her a ring from the UK before you go on either number, that way you will be sure.

Hatty - That is a good idea. Yes I will do that

Tom Steel - Sorry I've never been to the country before so am not au fait with it at all.

I can tell you its just North of Tuzluca if that helps?

I do have directions already from the lady who owns the villa but anything you have that you believe will be beneficial would be great.

Cheers

Hatty - Called Ribeya and was just about able to communicate so I believe she said to call her 1/2 hour before arriving at the border and she will arrange to meet us there so that is great! Very good of you to get that phone number, thanks.

Vidal - I tried to get that map EVERYWHERE... Sadly the old version (2003 edition) has been out of print for ages and seems very difficult to find (I couldn't) and according to Penguin, who publish the new version supposedly available on Amazon, they have indefinitely suspended the printing of the 2010 replacement so that will actually never become available even though it's available to buy on most big book sellers websites.

I ended up purchasing the Insight travel map which seemed like the best alternative according to reviews

Tom - Thanks so much for your effort with the directions card. Received and I'm sure will come in very handy.

So that should about cover it. Any general pieces of advice when visiting the North?

Cheers guys
